The Wayne County Republicans Party approved a resolution Monday saying that the United States should withdraw its membership from the United Nations.

More than 100 people attended the GOP's annual county convention, held Monday night at the Wayne Center.

Ed Wharton, the chairman of the county party, said those who voted for the resolution believe the U.N. is "out of control."

"We feel like there are more and more problems there, and we think we should quit putting money into it," Wharton said.

Jerry Grantham said many people believe that the U.S. membership in the international body is unconstitutional.

"The question is sovereignty, and we shouldn't surrender it," Grantham said.

Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. spoke at the convention, bringing Wayne residents up to date on congressional issues. State Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby urged attendees to help in the election of conservative judges.

Wharton was re-elected chairman of the county organization. Bob Jackson was elected first vice-chairman and Willie Rae Starling was elected as second vice-chairman. Carla Bedford was elected secretary and Sheryl Allman was elected treasurer.
