Gun shop
break-in
Thieves entered a gun shop before dawn today and stole two handguns and a holster, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report. The property was recovered later.
Sheriff's deputies were notified at 3:55 a.m. about a burglar alarm at Wild Indian Gun Co. at 2305 U.S. 13 North. When they arrived, the report said, they found a ladder leading to the roof and a hole in the roof.
The owner, Todd Gurganus of Smithfield, said he did not know if anything else had been taken. The handguns and the holster, valued at a combined $893, were found elsewhere.
The latest attempted break-in was the fifth this year at the shop, sheriff's detectives said. Thieves also damaged the store's roof and got inside early March 16, but nothing was reported stolen.
House fire
MOUNT OLIVE -- A small, wood-frame house was destroyed Tuesday in fire of an undetermined cause, fire officials said. No one was injured in the predawn blaze at 311 Nelson St.
The 800-square-foot home, owned by Jimmy Kornegay of Mount Olive, was valued at $20,000. Contents, valued at $3,500, also were destroyed. The occupant's name was not immediately known.
Eleven Mount Olive firefighters answered the 3:39 a.m. alarm with three trucks and needed about an hour and a half to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work. Calypso volunteers assisted.
