The 2004-2005 class of Leadership Wayne County held its community services/arts and leisure day earlier this month.
The class met Friday, March 18, at the Family YMCA where Hal Warner, the Y's senior program director, provided a tour of the facilities and a review of the YMCA programs. They also learned about the Warm Hearts mentoring program that the Y coordinates for Wayne County youth.
The class then met with Gail Charles of the Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Department, toured Herman Park Center and heard about various activities and programs offered for Wayne County citizens of all ages.
Class members delivered about 20 meals for the Meals on Wheels program as part of a community service activity. Isabelle Doss updated the class on WAGES' older adult services, including medication management, foster grandparent opportunities and a home weatherization assistance program.
Charisse Johnson, WAGES' deputy director for children, youth and families, explained that WAGES provides some level of support for more than 600 children per day in Wayne County through programs such as Head Start, Early Head Start, and More at Four.
Lunch was provided to the class courtesy of WAGES.
The class then toured Wayne Memorial Hospital. The class visited the MRI facility and toured the new 26,000-square-foot wing that houses business services, a pharmacy center and training facilities.
The day closed with a round table discussion. Red Cross Blood Services Director Don Best, Salvation Army Shelter Director Janice Sauls and D.J. Coles of WATCH offered insight to the services provided by their organizations.
