Young people raising livestock are busily preparing for the 57th Annual Wayne County Junior Livestock Show and Sale to be held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

Michael Sauls, 17, and his brother, Jacob, 7, are two Wayne County youth who will be showing their animals at the event. The brothers raise goats, hogs, chickens and ducks on their family's farm near LaGrange.

Michael is getting two animals ready for the show. He's been preparing his hog, Roxanne, and goat, Bo, for the event since January. Active in the Future Farmers of America at Eastern Wayne High School, Michael has been showing livestock for seven years.

Jacob, Michael's 7-year-old brother, will show his hog, Pearl. He has been showing animals for three years.

Jacob said he has been working hard to get ready for this year's show.

"I've been practicing driving my hog," he said. "I'm going to shave her, wash her, and put her in the stall. She'll get ready to show," he said.

The week off from school gives the Saul brothers and other young livestock producers a chance to put the finishing touches on their preparations.

Michael and Jacob said they will gather up the supplies they'll need today, before loading up their animals for the trip to the fairgrounds. The list of supplies includes shampoo to make the animals look their best for the judges.

"We'll take them to the show tomorrow in the morning and weigh them in. After 11, we'll wash them and get them bedded down," Michael says.

The brothers plan to sell their hogs following Tuesday night's show. Michael said he plans to keep his goat and show it again at other events.

Jacob says he is looking forward to the next two days for the chance to win a trophy and the chance to be with other friends who are interested in raising livestock.

"I like the trophies 'cause they're real big," he said, "and I have lot of friends up there."
