Sex offenses
get 25-year term
A 23-year-old Goldsboro man has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison after being convicted by a Wayne County Superior Court jury of four felony sex offenses with a 2-year-old child.
Johnnie Edward Hall Jr. of West New Hope Road was sentenced by Judge Paul L. Jones to 242 to 300 months.
Hall was convicted of two counts of a first-degree sex offense with a child and one count of a sex offense in a parental role and indecent liberties with a child. A charge of a lewd and lascivious act was dismissed. Hall also was ordered to pay his court-appointed lawyer $1,852.50.
The jury deliberated for an hour and 10 minutes to reach a verdict, ending the three-day trial.
Break-in
An alert citizen saw a man breaking into a house Thursday and then called authorities. Goldsboro police arrived quickly and arrested a suspect. Officers said Ricky Jodan Henderson, who did not disclose a home address, admitted to the break-in in the 400 block of North Virginia Street and to the theft of copper wire. Henderson, 25, was charged with breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Brakes fail
The brakes on a woman's car failed Thursday, and the 37-year-old auto struck a church and a parked sport utility vehicle, according to a Goldsboro police report. Mandaina M. Taylor, 51, of South Slocumb Street was trying to park between two vehicles in the 100 block of West Walnut Street when her car went over the curb and struck the church. Then she backed off the sidewalk, her brakes failed again and her car struck the parked SUV, police said.
Ms. Taylor was charged with an equipment violation. Damage was estimated at $200 to her car and $20 to the SUV, registered to Timothy Ray Sharp of Lake Ridge Drive. No damage was reported to the church.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Gunshots before dawn today damaged the front door, a window and five walls of a home in the 500 block of Stronach Avenue. Damage was estimated at $300 at the M.R. Hines home. Shell casings were recovered on a nearby street.
*Cosmetics and a purse with a cell phone, a watch sunglasses and earrings were stolen Thursday after a car window was smashed in the Little River Square parking lot on West Grantham Street. Angela L. Boyette of Princeton estimated the value of the stolen property at $920 and damage at $250.
*A DVD player, baby bags with bottles and personal papers were stolen Thursday after a vehicle window was shattered in the Bojangles parking lot on N.C. 111 South,. Damon Patrick Norton of Clayton estimated the stolen property's value at more than $285 and damage at $600.
*A brief case and license plates were stolen Thursday after a truck window was broken in the Texas Steakhouse parking lot on North Spence Avenue. John Michael Best of Goldsboro, said his property was worth more than $200. Damage was set at $200.
*A hand-held computer, a calculator, a case, two cell phones, a laser pointer, $253 and personal papers were stolen after a car window was smashed in the Logan's Roadhouse parking lot on Sunburst Drive. Michael Anthony Weeks of Willow Springs, estimated the stolen property's value at $1,413 and damage at $250.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A John Deere riding lawn mower and a Honda three-wheeler were stolen from a shelter in the 1100 block of Capps Bridge Road. The resident, Jeffrey Wayne Phillips, estimated the value of the stolen property at $3,800.
*Two plows, two discs, five cultivators, a fertilizer distributor and aluminum siding were stolen from the 1800 block of Big Daddy's Road,. The value of the missing property, owned by Bobby Lee Gooding of Pikeville, was not immediately known.
Child abuse
A 33-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Thursday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony child abuse while inflicting serious injury.
Carlos Lee Williams of Rollingwood Drive was accused of injuring a 9-year-old child on Sunday, detectives said. The child has been hospitalized for treatment of the injuries. Williams was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
