Scam alert
Goldsboro police are warning the public about a scam involving a caller who poses as a family member, friend or neighbor. The caller, a man, tells the victim that the relative's car has broken down and he needs money so that it can be towed by a wrecker.
Police say that after the caller convinces the victim to bring money, he meets the victim and tells him that the relative, friend or neighbor had to leave and that he was told to collect the money.
When the victim calls the relative, friend or neighbor about repaying the loan, the victim discovers the person had not called to borrow money for a tow truck.
The victims have described the man as white, about 30 years old, 5-feet-9 with a thin build and brown hair.
Anyone with information on this scam was asked to call police at 705-6572, Investigator Trey Ball at 580-4218 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255.
Burglary charges
A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with three felony crimes after a residential break-in and theft. Michael Jerome Jarman Jr. of Antioch Road, Pikeville, was accused of barging into a home on Shady Creek Lane on Jan. 31 and stealing a fire radio from a Patetown volunteer fireman, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. The radio, valued at $390, was recovered. Jarman was charged with second-degree burglary, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Thefts
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A Dell laptop computer, DVD equipment and $80 were stolen Tuesday from a home in the 200 block of Ann Street. The thief had smashed a door glass to get inside. The stolen property was valued at $1,095. Damage was set at $150 at the Aaron Chopp home.
*A combination radio and compact disc player was stolen Tuesday after a car window was smashed in a night club parking lot in the 2700 block of East Ash Street. Darrell Ray Kennedy of LaGrange put a $50 value on the radio. No damage estimate was listed.
*Gardening tools were stolen from an unlocked shed in the 2400 block of N.C. 55 East. The thief also inflicted about $1,500 in damages to 15 camellia bushes, the report said. June Elmer Wolfe Jr. put a $295 value on the tools.
*A generator and an engine hoist were stolen from an unlocked building in the 400 block of Old Kenly Road. Jeff Spence Berry said the property was worth $1,300.
Drug charge
A 24-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony controlled substance violation. Juan Tramaine Smith of Marlette Drive was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver Darvon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Accidents
Damages were estimated at $13,800 in two recent traffic accidents in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A driver said he was run off U.S. 117 near Old Mount Olive Road at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, and the car that he was driving was damaged, the Highway Patrol said. Jeffrey Lynn Deal, 21, of North Church Street, Mount Olive, was neither injured nor charged. The car struck several sign posts and sustained about $7,800 in damages.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-car wreck at 5:48 p.m. Saturday on Outlaw Road near Ruskin Road, the Highway Patrol said. Geraldine M. Barfield, 67, of Marlette Drive, was charged with a yield violation. The other motorist, David Lee Tucker, 17, of U.S. 117 Alternate, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
