Six selected for Governor's School East

Six Wayne County high school students have been accepted to the 2005 summer session of the North Carolina Governor's School.
Chosen to attend sessions at the Governor's School East on the Meredith College campus in Raleigh were Jameson C. Best of Southern Wayne High, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Douglas Best of Mount Olive, and Christopher A. Summerlin of Eastern Wayne High, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Summerlin of Goldsboro.
Attending Governor's School West on the Salem College campus in Winston-Salem will be Maryanne B. Garris of Eastern Wayne High, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Garris of La Grange; Richard B. Strauss of Charles B. Aycock High School, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Strauss of Fremont; Thomas J.K. Swedenburg of Spring Creek High School, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Swedenburg of Goldsboro; and Kathryn J. Westfall of Southern Wayne High, the daughter of Mrs. Nancy J. Westfall of Dudley.
The North Carolina Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically gifted high school students in the nation. The program offers a non-credit curriculum to 800 students from across the state.
Students are nominated for the Governor's School by teachers, counselors or principals to the local public school superintendent or private school headmaster. Each school system determines which of the school nominees will be sent for final selection at the state level.
The session begins June 12 and runs through July 23.
