Kindergarten pre-registration day for the Wayne County public school system will be held on Friday, April 8, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at each elementary school.
A child must be five years old on or before October 16 to register for kindergarten for the coming school year. Parents/legal guardians must present an official birth certificate, immunization records, and a child's social security number to school officials.
Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child's birth. A parent must also show "proof of residence," i.e., electric bill, telephone bill, etc.
North Carolina law requires that before kindergarten registration, a child must receive a health assessment and his/her shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form available from the county school system, the county health department, and most pediatricians' offices.
If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during pre-registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on August 25.
Anyone unable to register a child on the designated day should contact the school as soon as possible. If you are unsure of the school your child will attend, call school administrative offices at 731-5900 or stop by the administrative offices at 2001 East Royall Avenue. All students registering for kindergarten must register in the school in the district in which they live. If a parent/guardian wishes to request a transfer to a different school, transfer requests will be accepted during the month of June for schools that have space available. A list of schools with space available will be made public.
Students currently enrolled in kindergarten will not attend school on April 8, which will count as a vacation day for these students.
