An estimated three thousand Civil War re-enactors will converge at the Bentonville Battleground Historic Site on Saturday and Sunday to mark the 140th anniversary of the largest battle ever fought on North Carolina soil.

State historians say they expect as many as 20,000 spectators to witness the battle re-creations, which will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Military campsites will be open both days for the public to view and experts on the war will deliver lectures on various subjects pertaining to the battle, which took place on March 19-21, 1865.

Bentonville Battleground is located about 20 miles west of Goldsboro, on Harper House Road off N.C. 701 in southeastern Johnston County.
