Roof damaged
in break-in try
Thieves cut a hole in the roof of a gun shop before dawn today and tried to steal firearms, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives said no weapons had been reported stolen from Wild Indian Gun Co. at 2305 U.S. 13 North. The thieves may have been scared off when the burglar alarm sounded.
Patrol Sgt. Steve Mozingo answered the alarm at 3:22 a.m. and found a hole in the roof. Other deputies responded and set up a perimeter around the business. They said the phone box had been damaged and a ladder set up against the building. Light bulbs had been removed or broken, the report said. Deputies took photos of evidence at the store. Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris was assigned to the investigation.
No arrests have been made.
The store owner, Todd Gurganus of Smithfield, estimated damage to the roof at $1,000. Other damage was estimated at $31.
The attempted break-in was the fourth in a year at the store, detectives said.
