Highway meeting
Information on the state Transportation Improvement Program will be presented by highway officials Thursday at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce at 308 N. William Street.
The meeting of the Rural Transportation Planning Organization will begin at 10 a.m. with the TIP update about 10:45.
The group includes representatives from Wayne, Lenoir, Greene and Duplin counties. Members of the public will have an opportunity to speak at the meeting. More information about the meeting may be obtained by calling 252-638-3185, ext. 3002 or emailing [email protected].
Meeting time changed
The Board of Education meeting scheduled for April 4 has been changed to April 11. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the Board Room of the administrative offices on Royall Avenue.
The Board will hold a budget work session on April 20 at 8:30 a.m. in Conference Room A of the administrative offices.
Arbor Day
The public is invited to an Arbor Day celebration Friday at 10 a.m. in Herman Park.
Mayor Al King and Jerry Meek, N.C. Democratic Party chairman, will speak, followed by the planting of an oak tree. Landscape Design donated the tree and seedlings that will be given out to people attending the event.

Buffalo Soldiers
MOUNT OLIVE -- Dr. Frank N. Schubert, an expert on "Buffalo Soldiers," will speak at Mount Olive College Friday in Rodgers Chapel at 1:30 p.m. The seminar is free and open to the public.
"Buffalo Soldiers" is the nickname that Indians gave black Calvarymen during the 1800s.
Schubert is a graduate of Howard University, received his master's degree from the University of Wyoming, and a Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. He served in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam, and rose to the rank of captain. He also worked as a historian in the Department of Defense when he retired as chief of the Joint Operational History Branch.
He has written extensively on military subjects, including frontier exploration, black soldiers and military construction.
