Princeton makes a clean sweep
PRINCETON -- Princeton police officers completed "a clean sweep" Monday, tagging unlicensed animals, junked cars, solid waste violations and dilapidated structures.
Police Chief Eddie Lewis said the project "went real well." Those property and animal owners who received notices, Lewis said, have 10 days to start cleaning up their property or to get animal licenses. If they do not comply, Lewis said he will issue citations.
Lewis said three-fourths of the town was covered Saturday, when officers tagged 38 animals, 37 junked vehicles and 13 structures and found 49 solid waste violations. The structures, the chief said, were sheds and outbuildings.
Fremont police make four arrests
FREMONT -- Fremont police arrested and charged four Fremont men over the weekend, including one for two felony drug offenses. They were:
*Delarcus Tirrell Jones, 31, of East Branch Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and sale and delivery of cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
*George Edwards Mayes Jr., 20, of Friendship Drive was held on three outstanding arrest orders for failure to appear in court. He was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
*Marvin Devaughn Spells, 62, of South Goldsboro Street was charged with larceny, assault and second-degree trespass. His secured bond was set at $1,000 on the misdemeanor offenses.
*James Franklin Green, 38, of East South Street was charged with domestic assault and resisting arrest. He was held in jail without bond.
Fourth arrest
A fourth person has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with possession of property stolen from homes in the Marsh Landing subdivision off Buck Swamp Road
O'Keith Parker, 20, of Fred Harris Road, Snow Hill, was arrested by Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris. Parker's secured bond was set at $400. Most of the stolen property has been recovered.
Arrested earlier were Henry N. Bermudez, 17, of Weathersby Drive; Kendrick Jeremial Goff, 17, of Peachtree Drive, and Jonathan Nathaniel Brooks, 18, of Dollard Town Road.
Suspended term
A 23-year-old man who had testified against a co-defendant in an armed robbery case has received a suspended sentence.
Omar Venegas of Wilson had testified in Wayne County Superior Court against Felix Hernandez, 29, of Wilson. Hernandez was sentenced last week to about four to six years in prison.
Venegas was accused of taking part in a June 25 robbery of a convenience store at N.C. 111 and N.C. 55. The victims called authorities with a description of the suspects and their getaway car. Venegas, Hernandez and Carlos Antonio Ramos, 32, of Wilson were captured soon after the holdup.
Venegas was sentenced by Judge Jerry Braswell of Goldsboro to 10 to 12 months in prison, but the term was suspended on condition that he complete 24 hours of supervised probation and 100 hours of community service and pay $3.071.26 in restitution and a $500 fine and court costs.
Ramos was sentenced Dec. 13 to 38 to 35 months after pleading guilty to two counts of armed robbery.
Pair sentenced
Two Goldsboro men have been sentenced in Wayne County Superior Court to more than four years in prison for their part in a home invasion on Rockefeller Court in Goldsboro.
Jamar Ray Campbell, 20, of Rosewood Road and Donald Jermaine Sheppard, 20, of Rockefeller Court pleaded guilty to two armed robbery charges. Campbell was sentenced to 60 to 81 months, and Sheppard was sentenced to 51 to 71 months.
The two were accused of barging into a home on Nov. 16, kidnapping the victim and then robbing him at gunpoint. After a call to 911, A-shift patrol officers found the suspects within minutes and arrested them.
The stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim. The weapon also was found.
Pair assaulted
An intruder barged into a home on Waters Street and assaulted a woman and a man Monday, Goldsboro police reported.
The woman resident said the intruder came through a window and struck her several times and then struck the man, knocking him to the floor. The suspect then threatened to kill both people, the report said.
The intruder was described as black, about 25 years old, 5-feet-11 and 170 pounds with a medium build, long hair and brown eyes. He fled in a sport utility vehicle.
Weapons theft
Eight firearms and 800 rounds of ammunition were stolen between Sunday and Monday from an apartment in the 700 block of South Randolph Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The thief had inflicted about $200 in damages to a door to enter Allan Head's home, police said.
The firearms included two handguns and six long guns, valued at $2,400. The ammunition was valued at $120. A $100 stereo system also was taken.
A neighbor, Timothy Gupton, who reported the theft, also told police that his apartment had been broken into. A thief also had inflicted about $200 in damages to a door. Video-game equipment, three basketball jerseys, three pairs of shoes and alcohol were stolen Monday. The property was valued at $540.
Shootings
A home near Dudley and a car in Goldsboro were damaged Monday night by gunfire, according to reports. No one was injured.
*Gunshots damaged a home in the 200 block of Brewington Road, Wayne County sheriff's deputies said. A front window, walls and vinyl paneling were damaged. The resident, Glenda Pearsall, estimated damage at $850.
*A tail light, a window, a bumper and the side of a car were struck in the 300 block of North Carolina Street, Goldsboro police said. Damages were estimated at $1,000 to the car, owned by Dale Johnson of Goldsboro.
Drug charges
A 47-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with felony drug offenses.
James Calvin Johnson of Park Avenue was charged with possession of heroin, possession of marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling drugs. He also was charged with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and not having a driver's license. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Johnson was arrested after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers, a traffic stop and a search of a home on Crawford Street.
Fraud charge
A 34-year-old woman was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony counts of obtaining prescription medicine by fraud.
Alisa Shannon Champion of Pecan Road, Dudley, was accused of taking prescription notes from her employer and then forging the medication information and a doctor's name, Investigator Trey Ball said.
Ms. Champion was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond. Officer Reid Lee of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Police Department assisted in the investigation.
Collisions
Damages were estimated at $20,900 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,900 in a two-vehicle collision at 1:45 p.m. Monday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Graves Drive, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Nichole Jasmine Lumpkin, 18, of Davelin Place, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver was listed as Patricia Darlene Mudd, 41, of Sanderson Road, Seven Springs.
*Damages were set at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:50 p.m. Monday on East Ash Street near North Slocumb Street, police said. One motorist, Annie Lee Heath, 44, of Talbert Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was identified as Carlos Mark Lilly, 24, of Cuyler Best Road.
*A woman was charged with reckless driving at 4:45 p.m. Saturday after her eastbound sport utility vehicle ran off the left side of U.S. 70, crossed the median and the westbound lanes, struck two ditches and stopped in a field, the Highway Patrol said. Tina Janell Bradshaw, 32, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., was not injured, but her SUV had about $10,000 in damages.
Car stolen
A driver started her car today to warm it up, then returned inside and came back a few minutes later to find her car missing, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Sally A. Exum of Rose Street, said her four-door, silver 1996 Honda Accord was worth $6,000.
