Grass fires
Wayne County volunteer firefighters and the N.C. Forestry Service were busy Monday, putting out grass and woods fires, according to reports filed with Wayne County Emergency Services.
Indian Springs volunteers went three times to a fire in the 300 block of Slick Rock Road before putting it out. The Forestry Service assisted.
Pricetown and Seven Springs volunteers and the Forestry Service put out fires in the 200 block of Ada Stroud Road and the 100 block of Jimmy's Drive. The Forestry Service and volunteers also responded to a fire on Nahunta Road.
Goldsboro firefighters also put out a grass fire.
In other fires:
*An outbuilding in the 300 block of Lassiter Road was damaged Monday in a fire caused by burning trash, fire officials said. Oakland and Rosewood volunteers responded with two trucks each and put out the fire. The identity of the resident was not immediately known.
*A wood pile caught on fire Saturday behind Case Farms at 330 Pecan Road, Dudley, and damaged a metal garage used to repair palates. Arrington Fire Chief Randy Rogers estimated damage at $300. Arrington, Mar Mac and Dudley volunteers responded to the afternoon fire.
Suspects sought
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on two white men who entered a 94-year-old woman's home on Wayne Memorial Drive between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday.
The woman told deputies that the men had told her that she had had phone trouble and then they came inside and investigated. After a short time, she felt uncomfortable with them inside and called her daughter. When she hung up, the men left. The daughter came to the home and discovered that the phone line had been cut. The elderly woman said nothing had been stolen.
The men were described as being about 30 years and wearing white shirts and white hats. They fled in a large white van or sport utility vehicle. Anyone with information on the suspects was asked to call Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster or Capt. George Raecher at 731-1481.
Boy shot
with BB gun
A 7-year-old boy was shot Monday in the face by a teen-ager with an air rifle, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The boy was shot at about 4 p.m. at his home on Old Mount Olive Road. He was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
The suspect, a 14-year-old neighbor, had pointed the air rifle at the boy who then told him to put the weapon down. When the boy turned his head, the teen shot him in the face. The teen faces charges as a juvenile.
School break-in
A brother and a sister, 12 and 13 years old, were arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged in juvenile petitions with breaking into Brogden Middle School last weekend.
Two windows in an office and another in a classroom building were broken Saturday. Damages were put at $800. School officials determined that some property was stolen.
The pair who were students at the school were charged with breaking and entering and larceny, Detective Sgt. Mike Kabler said.
Accidents
Damages were estimated at more than $11,800 Monday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Damages were estimated at $6,800 in a three-vehicle collision at 3:11 p.m. Monday on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 bypass, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Wilbert Darrell Lewis, 52, of Emmitte Drive, said he fell asleep. He was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorists who had stopped were identified as Murry Rayburn Daw, 66, of Stoney Creek Church Road and Benton M. Eubanks, 30, of Emmaus Church Road, Seven Springs.
*Damages were estimated at more than $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 10:40 a.m. Monday at North Slocumb and East Mulberry streets, police said. A southbound driver, Andrea Linette Hooker, 38, of Farmville, was charged with a stoplight violation. The other driver, Garry Lamont Truzy, 40, of Winslow Place, was going west.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A heater and air-conditioner unit was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 100 block of Peacock Street near Fremont, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Sergio Vasquez Hernandez, said the unit was worth $1,800.
*A gold, four-door 1991 Buick Park Avenue was stolen Monday from a fast-food restaurant parking lot at 220 E. Ash St., Goldsboro police said. The driver, Jake Parker, said he left the car unlocked and the key in the ignition when he went inside, the report said. The car, valued at $1,500, is owned by Sarah Andrews of Mount Olive.
Drug charge
A 37-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers and charged with felony drug offenses in his home.
Sebastian Darness Woods of Devereaux Street was charged with possession of cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine and marijuana and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
