Honesty pays
Goldsboro High School senior Jarrett Bryant didn't hesitate when he spotted an bank envelope full of money while he was working at Food Lion on Sunday a week ago.
Bryant, 18, is a cashier and bagger at the store on Spence Avenue. When he saw the envelope someone had left behind on a counter, he turned it over to his supervisor without even stopping to count it.
Later, he was called into the store office and was asked if he knew how much money the envelope contained.
No, he answered.
It held $1,760.
A couple of days later an elderly woman came to the store, trying to trace the lost money. Store videotapes confirmed the rightful owner and the money was returned.
And Bryant, who recently received a scholarship to play football at Fayetteville State University, got a thank-you in the form of a $100 bill.

Filing fees
MOUNT OLIVE -- Filing fees for the upcoming election will be $24 for mayor and $6 for town commissioners in Mount Olive.
The Mount Olive town Board of Commissioners voted Monday night to keep the filing fees the same as last year.
Each town sets its own filing fees for municipal elections. The filing period begins at noon on July 1 and continues until noon on Aug. 5.
In Mount Olive all seats are up for re-election, including the mayor, four districts and the at-large seat. While most town elected officials serve four-year terms, Mount Olive holds its municipal elections every two years.
In Seven Springs, the mayor and two commissioners, Rodolph Adams and Peggy Jones, are up for re-election.
Goldsboro and Fremont are the only towns in Wayne County that don't have a municipal election this year, and the only sanitary districts that don't have elections this time around are Southwestern Wayne and Northwestern Wayne.
