House fires

Goldsboro firefighters on the C-shift had a busy weekend that was capped Sunday by a kitchen fire.

Unattended cooking was blamed Sunday for a fire that damaged a house at 1003 N. James St., according to fire officials. Thirteen firefighters answered the 1:17 p.m. alarm.

Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the wood-frame house that was owned by Mae McKinney of Goldsboro and occupied by Michael Johnson. The home was valued at $35,000.

Two fires Friday night were referred to Goldsboro police for a further investigation.

A fire at 901 N. Center St. "was fully involved when we rode up," Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said. The home, valued at $35,000, was destroyed. The owner has not been identified. Firefighters needed almost three hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.

A fire at 1101 N. George St. started in an upstairs room where a couch, the floor and a wall were burned. Boyette said the fire was contained in the room. Damage was set at about $3,000.

The home, valued at $45,000, is owned by Derrick Sauls of Raleigh.
