ALBERTSON -- A private campaign aimed at establishing a library in this northeastern Duplin County community has raised $50,000, say its organizers.
The board of the Northeast Duplin Communities Library has been working for more than a year to create a library in the former Peary Davis home at the intersection of N.C. 903 and N.C. 111.
The group hopes to raise $160,000 to pay for buying the building, making renovations and buying books and other materials.
The group is offering naming rights to the new library in exchange for a donation of $50,000. For $10,000, the donor can have his or her name on the facility's kitchenette. Volunteers are performing the necessary plumbing, heating system and electrical work, said the board's publicity chairman, Dorine Williams.
"We've not really had to spend a lot," she said. "We've got a beautiful building. We were lucky to get it. It's well-built, and it's in a perfect location."
The board members are holding donated books at their homes and in churches. The Duplin County Public Library has promised to furnish 500 books on a rotating basis.
