Goldsboro High and Brodgen Middle schools emerged the winners at the Knowledge Bowl held recently at Dillard Middle School.
Sponsored by the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base African American Heritage Committee, the event was designed to further educate youth on the diverse culture of American history. Held in conjunction with Black History Month, all nationalities were encouraged to participate.
Tech. Sgt. Montez Jones was chairman of the event. He said he became familiar with the concept where he was previously stationed and thought it would be a good community event in Wayne County.
More than 85 students from 12 area schools participated. Each school had a team of from five to seven members. Teachers coached the students on questions that could be asked in the contest.
Four high schools and eight middle schools sent teams to the event. Goldsboro High won at the high school level over Charles B. Aycock, Eastern Wayne, and Spring Creek high schools. Brogden Middle placed first over Dillard, Eastern Wayne, Goldsboro, Grantham, Greenwood, Mount Olive, and Rosewood middle schools.
Every participant received a certificate. Each winning team member received a trophy and a traveling trophy was given to the winning schools.
Goldsboro Mayor Al King attended and helped present the awards.
"I was so proud of all of them," he said later, noting that it was good to see different races coming together to learn about black history.
Jones said the first-time competition went very well, with hopes to make it an annual event.
"We are looking for more support for the second event," he said. "We will try to do it again next February and have even more participating."
He also thanked Dean Sauls, he lead social studies teacher with the Wayne County public schools, who helped publicize the event through the area schools.
