Mount Olive man wins highest Scout award

CLAYTON -- Craig Hansen of Mount Olive received one of four Silver Beaver Awards presented by the Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Hanson and the other recipients, Janet Medlin of Princeton, Dr. Lewis Fetterman Jr., of Clinton and Denny Godwin of Garner, received the awards at the Clayton Civitan Center on Thursday night at the council's 82nd annual banquet.

The banquet is held to recognize volunteers for their efforts in the four-county council. The Silver Beaver is the Scouts' highest volunteer award.
Hansen is assistant scoutmaster of Troop 34. He has also served as cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 34, a Tiger Cub leader and a Webelos leader. He has been a commissioner of the Torhunta Scout District for four years and has served as chairman of the Merit Badge College for many years. He also is a member of the Cub Scout training staff and the Wood Badge training staff for the Tuscarora Council.
Hanson has served on the board of the Mount Olive Boys & Girls Club and the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce and works at his church as youth minister.
Mrs. Medlin works at O'Berry Center in Goldsboro. She has been a cubmaster for Princeton Cub Pack 23 and a commissioner of the Neusiok Scout District. She started in scouting helping keep the records for her son's Cub Scout den. She has supported the Johnston County Golf Tournament and chaired the popcorn delivery to scouting units. She is a committee member for Cub Pack 23, Troop 23 in Princeton and Troop 77 in Smithfield. Mrs. Medlin also is a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Fetterman is an Eagle Scout. He has received the Wood Badge in 2000 and became a scoutmaster in 2001. He served as an assistant scout master at the world jamborees in Chili and Thailand and has been the recipient of the District Award of Merit.
Godwin has been a member of the council camping committee, an active unit commissioner and has helped direct several district camporees. He also has committed much time to making carving blanks for the trading post at summer camp. He has worked a lot in training, helping out with scoutmaster training and the Order of the Arrow.
Cub Scout Pack 24 and Boy Scout troops 24 and 124 of Clayton hosted the banquet.
Clayton is in the Neusiok District, which received the Outstanding District Membership Award. The district has 1,962 young people involved in scouting, a 6.8 percent increase in membership at a time when many districts are fighting to maintain their levels of membership.
