Wayne is among counties that were placed under a winter weather advisory this afternoon when snow began falling in neighboring counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a band of heavy snow was moving east across the Coastal Plain through 3 p.m. resulting in accumulations up to an inch from Smithfield and Goldsboro north to Wilson.
The snow is expected to taper off shortly after 3 p.m.
School systems in Wake and other counties, as well as Johnston, were closing early.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially on bridges and overpasses.
