State arts council
The North Carolina Arts Council will crisscross the state in February to seek public input for its long-range strategic plan. Wednesday, Feb. 9, will find Arts Council board and staff members in Kinston in the Jenkins Room at the Community Council for the Arts, 400 N. Queen St., from 7 until 9 p.m. The Community Council for the Arts will serve as host. Directions can be obtained by calling 1-252-527-2517.
"Naturally, while the content of our strategic plan has changed over time, the intent has always remained the same -- to make North Carolina a better state through the arts," said Arts Council Executive Director Mary B. Regan. "The arts keep our communities vibrant, make creative and productive citizens, and foster the self-expression vital in a free society."
North Carolina's nonprofit arts industry also provides the powerful impact of $723 million annually, with nearly 7,000 full-time jobs. Leading non-profit arts groups in the state average 13 full-time jobs per organization. That number can double with part time and seasonal workers. Full-time salaries alone generate an estimated $32 million in federal and state taxes.
State treasurer to speak
State Treasurer Richard Moore will speak Tuesday afternoon at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new City Hall addition. The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. beside the existing City Hall on Center Street.
Firemen's banquet
The annual Wayne County Firemen's Association banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lane Tree Golf Club on Salem Church Road.
New officers for the association and the women's auxiliary will be installed.
The annual G. Edgar Summerlin Award will be presented to the county's outstanding volunteer firefighter. The auxiliary member of the year also will be recognized.
Water service interruption
Water service for residents in the 1800 block of Middleton Road will be interrupted Wednesday from 8 a.m. to noon. The city is installing new water valves in the area. If it rains, the installation will be postponed until Thursday.
