Counterfeit
payroll checks
being passed
At least two counterfeit payroll checks with the name Waste Management Corp. have been passed -- and each was signed with the name of a former congressman, a Wayne County sheriff's detective says.
Both checks were signed with the name H. Martin Lancaster, the former Third District congressman and president of the state's community college system. The name Mary Moore also was signed on the checks.
The checks were passed at a convenience store in Goldsboro and another in Troy, which is in Montgomery County. The checks, one for $350.88 and the other for $275.55, were made payable to Albert King of Fasion Road, Laurinburg.
"It appears the suspects used a fake ID to cash the checks," Detective Sgt. Dean Roscoe said Wednesday.
No one at Waste Management offices in Selma and Pine Bluff knew anything about the checks.
Roscoe said anyone who takes a Waste Management check should be especially careful.
Three hurt
in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $23,710 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A Goldsboro man was charged with reckless driving at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after the car that he was operating skidded off the left side of Jefferson Avenue and struck a tree near Mulberry Street, Goldsboro police said. The driver, Darrell Rodriguez Taylor, 24, of East Holly Street, said he thought he had seen a dog in the street and swerved to avoid it. A witness said his dog was off the street. Taylor was not injured. But the car, valued at $4,000, was demolished.
*A bicyclist was struck by a car at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday on Dollard Town Road near Yearling Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Jonathan Nathaniel Brooks, 17, of Dollard Town Road, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, a spokeswoman said. Brooks pedaling east in the westbound lane without lights, the report said. The westbound driver, Jessica Lane Gardner, 19, of Meadowlark Road, said she was following a pickup truck that slowed abruptly and then she was blinded by the lights of an oncoming tractor-trailer truck. She swerved to the right to avoid the pickup and collided with the bike, the report said. Brooks was charged with operating a bicycle on the wrong side and a lighting violation. Ms. Gardner was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damage to the bike was set at $10.
*Damages were estimated at $8,300 in a one-car wreck at 3:15 p.m. Monday on Sheridan Forest Road near Old N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. Mary B. Daughtry, 58, of Sheridan Forest Road, was charged with driving left of center after her car ran off the left side and struck a power pole.
*Two people were injured and their car was demolished in a crash at 5:15 p.m. Monday on Stanley Chapel Church Road near Indian Springs Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Anna Elise Jones, 16, of N.C. 55 West, Mount Olive, was listed today in serious condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The passenger, Kelsea Sanders, 15, of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The car ran off the right side, Ms. Jones overcorrected the steering, and the car then ran off the left side, struck a ditch and overturned. The auto was valued at $8,600.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 3:50 a.m. Saturday at U.S. 70 and Perkins Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Antonio Cruz, 29, of LaGrange, was charged with reckless driving and driving while impaired. The car ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned into a parking lot at a convenience store. The car was valued at $2,800.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $15,388 worth of property was stolen Wednesday from the 1900 block of Memorial Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Eric F. Brock, reported the theft of a Toro riding lawn tractor with a 61-inch deck, a green Honda four-wheeler and a six-by-12-foot utility trailer. The lawn tractor was worth $9,388, the four-wheeler $4,500 and the trailer $1,500.
*A combination radio and compact disc player was stolen Wednesday after a car window was smashed and the dashboard was damaged, Goldsboro police said. The owner and resident, Francisco Javier Garcia, put a $200 value on the stolen property and set damage at $1,000.
Call leads
to arrest
An anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers helped Goldsboro police find and arrest a 20-year-old man on two felony charges.
Richard Shawnquale Elliott of North Carolina Street was found by D-shift officers with a search dog in a home in the 400 block of Fussell Street, Investigator Seth Harris said.
Elliott was charged with second-degree burglary and conspiracy. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Man charged
in break-in
The break-in and theft of property from a home on Pinkney Church Road was cleared Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with the arrest of a 26-year-old man.
Joseph Thomas Talton of Nor-Am Road, Pikeville, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $7,500 secured bond.
Talton was arrested after officers searched his home, Detective Sgt. Mike Kabler said. Some stolen property was identified from serial numbers and was returned to the owner. Detectives were searching for the other property.
Drug charges
A 41-year-old man from Goldsboro was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with two felony counts of possession of narcotics.
Vernon Avon Horner of West Grantham Street also was wanted on a probation violation. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 33-year-old man has been reported missing to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Jonathan Paul Zimmer of 119 Pate Circle may be going to China, where he worked on a mission trip in October, relatives said. His car was found in the Raleigh-Durham Airport parking lot.
Zimmer, who was described only as white, was seen last at 8 a.m. Sunday. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
