The Girl Scouts' annual cookie sale has begun.
Scouts in the Council of Coastal Carolina will be taking orders over the next few weeks and delivering cookies in February and March. Booth sales will also take place during February and March.
Deborah Brady, program coordinator for the council, said about two-thirds of every dollar earned goes toward programs and services to benefit the girls. The rest is used to cover council expenses.
Selling cookies encourages girls to develop business skills, she said. They learn the importance of setting goals, working with others, managing money, following through with a commitment, and they gain confidence in dealing with the public.
"Girl Scouts has evolved to offer exciting and innovative programs," said Ms. Brady. "Today's Girl Scouts are involved in much more than cookies, camping, and crafts. We're technology. We're competitive sports. We're adventure. Today's Girl Scouts are more likely to be kickboxing, designing web pages and rock climbing than cooking or sewing."
The Girl Scout Council of Coastal Carolina serves more than 8,500 girls in 25 counties. Girl Scouts is open to girl's ages 5 through 17.
