Tables turned
The tables were turned on school board members Monday night, when they were called to center stage to be recognized.
Representatives of the Principals and Assistant Principals Association honored the Board of Education at its own meeting for the role it plays in the community.
Tasha Adams, principal of Edgewood Community Developmental School and president of the Wayne County branch of the National Educators Association, said the school board "plays a crucial part in the education of our children.
"Your job requires countless meetings and school functions to attend and a score of decisions to make."
Celia James, principal of Meadow Lane Elementary School, presented each board member with a certificate to coincide with January being "School Board Appreciation Month" and a gift certificate to the Steak Barn.
She announced each board member in order of years of service: George Moye, 16 years; Shirley Sims, 12; John Grantham, nine; Thelma Smith and Pete Gurley, eight years each; Lehman Smith, seven; and Rick Pridgen, two years.
Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of schools and secretary to the board, and Jack Edwards, board counsel, were also recognized.
More honors
Goldsboro's Mayor and City Council will host a floating reception honoring City Manager Richard Slozak, who is retiring after more than 30 years of service. The reception will be Thursday at the Goldsboro Country Club from 6 to 8 p.m. Those interested in attending should call 580-4330.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a Bloodmobile Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at O'Berry Center. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
