Fatal crash
LUMBERTON -- Two of five drivers involved in a collision Sunday night on Interstate 95 died after a tractor trailer truck driven by a Mount Olive resident went out of control.
The drivers who died at the scene were Justin Ward of Fayetteville and Herman Lester Hardy, 50, of Hampton, Va. They were struck by a 2005 Freightliner driven by Henry Joseph Worrell, 64, of Mount Olive.
The report filed by Lumberton police officer Jimmy Miller said Ward's passenger in his BMW, Jenifer Ward, 27, was treated and released at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Hardy was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla. A passenger in his car, Lorine Brown of Williamsburg, Va., was treated and released at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Miller said he was called to the accident at about 9 p.m. Sunday. He arrived at the northbound lane of I-95 between mile markers 16 and 17.
The tractor trailer had been going south on I-95 and tried to change lanes. It struck a 2004 Kia driven by Corey Harden, 18, of Savannah, Ga. She was unhurt. A passenger in the Kia, Emily Fields, 15, of Guyton, Ga., was unhurt.
The tractor trailer driver overcorrected and ran off the road on the left, striking and crossing the guard rail, the officer said.
It hit the Toyota and the BMW head-on, said Miller.
Another driver, Leon Green, 46, of Fort Bragg, was unhurt. He was driving a 2004 U-Haul rental truck. After the tractor trailer hit the Toyota, the Toyota changed lanes and became attached to the U-Haul trailer. The U-Haul trailer pulled the Toyota about two tenths of a mile.
