Nine people injured
in county collisions
Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $66,810 in 12 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and her car was demolished in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday at East Mulberry and Slocumb streets, Goldsboro police said. Lucille Wooten, 65, of Dollard Town Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Wooten's eastbound car was struck by a southbound vehicle. The other driver fled, the report said. Ms. Wooten's car was valued at $10,000.
*A truck crashed through the railroad crossbar on North Spence and Royall avenues at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday and did not stop, police said. The truck was registered to Valley Proteins Inc. of Rose Hill, the report said. Damage to the crossbar was set at $500.
*A driver was injured and the sport utility vehicle that she was driving was demolished in a wreck at 7:46 p.m. Monday on Emmaus Church Road near Stanley Chapel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Natasha Leavearne Clark, 17, of Kelly Springs Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Clark was charged with speeding after the SUV ran off the right side in a curve, then came back across the road and overturned in a field off the left side. The SUV was valued at $6,500.
*A bicyclist was struck by a car at 5:35 p.m. Sunday and injured on N.C. 111 near Acreview Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Hugh Victor Flora Jr., 58, of High Meadow Circle was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with not having a working rear light. The southbound driver, Edna L. Jones, 70, of Mount Carmel Church Road, Pikeville, was not charged. Damages were set at $2,310.
*Damages were estimated at $6,400 in a two-vehicle, hit-and-run collision at 7:10 p.m. Sunday on N.C. 55 near Emmaus Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. A pickup truck driven by Roger Glenn Wade, 47, of Parkton, was struck by a following car. The other driver fled. Troopers said the car was registered to Benjamin Santizo of Emmaus Church Road, Dudley.
*Damages were estimated at $5,600 in a two-car crash at 8:55 p.m. Sunday at U.S. 117 and the entrance to the Neuse River Shopping Center, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Angela W. Thompson, 33, of North Woodridge Drive, Pikeville, was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said her car collided with a car leaving the shopping center and driven by Edna S. Worley, 87, of U.S. 13 South.
*Damages were set at about $6,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 6:35 p.m. Saturday on O'Berry Road near U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Ieliato Valencia Garcia, 31, of Georgia Farms Drive, Dudley, was charged with driving while impaired and a yield violation. The report said he pulled from a driveway and the pickup truck that he was driving collided with a westbound car driven by Noe Abraham Lopez Ramirez, 34, of Will Anderson Road, Dudley.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 7:28 p.m. Saturday on Hood Swamp Road near Smith Farm Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Montrell Devon Taylor, 18, of Rachel Drive, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. He said he had swerved to avoid an animal in the road and lost control of the car. The car crossed the center line, came back across the road, ran off the right side, struck a bank and overturned. The car was valued at $5,500.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 6 a.m. Friday at U.S. 70 and N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Charles Hinson Jr., 63, of Rosewood Road was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He also was charged with a stoplight violation after his northbound car collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer driven by Hubert Minshew Jr., 38, of Leaning Post Lane, LaGrange. Damages were put at $4,500.
*A driver was charged with a stop-sign violation after a two-car collision at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Buck Swamp and Perkins roads, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Ella Sue Shannon, 73, of South Harding Drive, was going south. Her car collided with an eastbound auto operated by Minh Sieu Tran, 49, of Redfield Place, troopers said. Damages were fixed at $10,500.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:45 p.m. Thursday on Old Mount Olive Road near Southern Plaza Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Eusevia Domingues Velasquez, 29, of U.S. 117 Alternate, Dudley, was charged with hit and run and driving while his license was revoked after the rear-end crash. The impact knocked a pickup truck, driven by Ira Daniel Rhodes Jr., 47, of Old Smithfield Road, Princeton, off the right side. The hit-and-run car was found an hour later, and Velasquez was arrested.
*Five people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-truck wreck at 4 p.m. Dec. 7 on Thunder Swamp Road near Baker Chapel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Antonio Ambriz-Huerta, 31, and one passenger, Roberto Avila-Ambriz, 27, both of Baker Chapel Church Road, Mount Olive, and his other passenger, Gilberto Vega, 22, of Stanley Grove Road, Mount Olive, and the other driver, Shelton David Williford, 43, and his passenger, Amber Turnage, 7, both of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ambriz-Huerta, who was crossing the road from one driveway to another, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Williford was charged with a child-restraint violation.
Crime of the Week
A residential break-in and assault have been selected by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as this week's "Crime of the Week."
When Rebecca Holloman returned to her home in the 2300 block of Old Smithfield Road at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, she saw an older burgundy minivan in the driveway. She thought that it belonged to a relative and went on the front porch. The front door was ajar, and when she entered, she saw two black men inside and a third at the back of the home.
Ms. Holloman tried to back out of the door, but one intruder grabbed her and tried to pull her inside. A struggle ensued, and she fell from the porch. The intruders told her to stay on the ground. Then the man with whom she had struggled fired a handgun toward her. The gunman was described as weighing more than 300 pounds, and he wore a red shirt and a brown stocking cap.
Anyone with information on this break-in and assault was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
House fire
A predawn house fire caused about $8,500 in damages today at 201 Woodrose Ave., according to a report filed with Wayne County Emergency Services.
The fire started under a fireplace, New Hope volunteer fire officials said.
No injuries were reported.
Seventeen New Hope volunteers responded to the 1:31 a.m. call with four trucks. They controlled the fire in 28 minutes, but they remained for almost two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause, ventilate the home and finish salvage work. Pinewood offered mutual aid.
The home, owned by Rebecca Evans, was valued at $99,000. Contents were valued at $13,000.
Diamond ring stolen
A man swiped a diamond ring, valued at $4,500, on Tuesday night from Friedman's Jewelers in Berkeley Mall, Goldsboro police reported.
A black men entered the store at 7:10 p.m., asked to see the ring in a display case, grabbed it from the woman clerk and fled through Belk's, police said.
The suspect was described as being 25 to 30 years old, 5-feet-10 and 175 pounds with short black hair and green eyes. He wore a bright orange jacket, a yellow shirt and blue jeans.
Police also are investigating these reports:
*Two bracelets were stolen between Tuesday and dawn today from an apartment in the 200 block of Alpha Court. Police had received a call about a break-in in progress and arrived to find a window smashed and a ladder on the ground. The resident, Shadonnia Willis, returned home and put a $230 value on the bracelets. Damages was set at $500.
*Jewelry, computer equipment, a DVD player, a compact disc player and a CD case were stolen between Tuesday and dawn today after a door was damaged at a home in the 1600 block of Humphrey Street. The resident, Laura Pratt, estimated the value of the property at $3,870 and damage at $10.
*Stereo equipment, a DVD player, two DVD monitors and three neon lights were stolen between Monday and Tuesday after a car window was shattered in the 600 block of East New Hope Road. The resident, Rodney Hunter, estimated the property's value at $1,210 and damage at $100.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A furnace, a dishwasher, a refrigerator, a stove and 20 bundles of siding were stolen between July 6 and Tuesday from a repossessed mobile home in the 900 block of N.C. 222 East, sheriff's deputies said. The stolen property, owned by ABN ABRO Mortgage Co., was valued at $3,500.
*A compact disc player and two speakers were stolen Thursday from a car in the Eastern Wayne High School parking lot, deputies said. The thief had thrown a brick through a window to get inside. The driver, Heriberto Gonzalez Palacios of Goldsboro, put a $440 value on the property. No damage estimate was listed.
Meth charges
Three people, arrested by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad, are the first Wayne County residents charged under the new, tougher laws dealing with methamphetamine.
*James Sean Suggs, 34, of Daleview Drive was charged with possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling the drug. He also was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,500 secured bond.
*Monty Dewayne Grady and Lisa Renae Grady, both of U.S. 13 South, were charged with possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling the drug and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. An estimated $6,500 worth of methamphetamine was seized. Monty Grady was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond. Lisa Grady's bond was set at $9,600.
Drug charge
A teen-ager was arrested Tuesday by Goldsboro police at Goldsboro High School and charged with a felony drug offense.
Trevor Devonne Ham, 17, of Cindy Circle was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
False bomb report
A teen-ager has been arrested by Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with making a false bomb threat at Southern Wayne High School.
After the call Thursday, the school was evacuated and searched. No bomb was found.
Alysha Jeannette Williams, 16, of Potts Road, Dudley, was charged with a false bomb report to a public building. She was released from custody on $5,000 unsecured bond on the felony charge.
6 charged in holdup
The arrest of Demetrius Hamm last week in Raleigh on a charge of armed robbery capped a Goldsboro police investigation of the holdup of a Goldsboro bank.
Five others had been arrested in the Oct. 22 robbery of the New Century Bank at 425 N. Spence Ave.
Charged with Hamm, 22, of Level Street, were Quentin Bryce Barnes, 19, of North George Street; Rodney Forte, 18, of Maple Street; Octavius M. Broadhurst, 17, of Maple Street; Melena Louise Hudgins, 18, of East New Hope Road, and Leon Vinson Jr., 17, of South John Street.
Barnes was on probation after pleading guilty to robbing the same bank in May.
