Shooting chosen
as Crime of Week
A shooting at about 10 p.m. Nov. 19 at George and Fussell streets has been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as the latest "Crime of the Week."
The victim, Antwan Battle, told police that he had left a house on Fussell Street and was riding his bicycle to a nearby store. Then he was approached by two unknown black men who asked him to stop. Battle refused, even after the men threatened to shoot him.
As he rode away, he heard a gunshot and felt pain in his back and chest. He rode to a convenience store at North George and Grantham streets, where a bystander called 911. Battle was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he treated, admitted and released.
The gunman was described as being in his mid-20s, 6-feet-2 and 165 pounds, and he wore a black BALL CAP, a black shirt, a black coat and blue jeans. The other suspect was described as being about 20, 5-feet-8 and 135 pounds with long dreadlocks or braids in his hair, and he wore a camouflage coat.
Anyone with information on the shooting as asked to call police Investigator G.N. Lynch at 580-4214 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000, if their information leads to an arrest.
Teen assaulted
during break-in
A 19-year-old student at Rosewood High School returned home Thursday and found three intruders, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said. The woman was assaulted and one suspect fired a gunshot toward her, the report said.
Rebecca Jeyce Holloman told deputies that she saw an older burgundy minivan with wood-grain sides in her driveway in the 2300 block of Old Smithfield Road, but she said her cousin had a similar vehicle and did not consider it suspicious.
She said the incident happened like this:
When she opened the front door, she saw two men inside and a third leaving the rear of the home. She tried to leave, but one grabbed her and tried to pull her inside. She resisted, pulled away and fell off the front porch. The suspect told her to stay down, then pulled out a handgun and fired a shot toward her. The suspects then jumped in the minivan and fled down Old Smithfield Road.
The suspects were described as black and 18 to 20 years old. The gunman wore a red shirt and a brown stocking cap.
Robbery charge
A man wanted by Goldsboro police on a charge of robbing the New Century Bank on Nov. 22 was arrested Thursday in Raleigh.
Demetrius Hamm, 27, of Level Street was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $90,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for Monday to determine his legal representation.
Hamm was accused of participating in the bank holdup with several other people, Investigator M.K. Horstmann said. The others had been arrested earlier.
Drug, gun sentence
A 24-year-old man from Goldsboro has been sentenced in Federal District Court to 15 years in prison on drug trafficking and firearms charges.
Daimon Rashaun Teachey of East Vine Street was arrested July 17 after a joint investigation by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and the Wilmington office of the federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division.
Teachey was charged with possession of a firearm during drug trafficking crimes and distribution of more than five grams of cocaine.
Drug charge
A 52-year-old man from Goldsboro was arrested Thursday night by Goldsboro police and charged with a felony drug offense and three misdemeanors.
Willie Leverne Davis of Muriel Street was charged with possession of cocaine and also driving while his license was revoked, a stoplight violation and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500 secured bond.
School buses collide
Two Wayne County school buses sideswiped each other Wednesday on Ebenezer Church Road, the Highway Patrol said.
Neither driver -- Phyllis Ann Sutton, 49, of Country Run Lane and Patricia Thomas Toran, 40, of Friendswood Drive -- was charged or injured.
None of the 42 students on Ms. Sutton's bus and none of the 25 students on Ms. Toran's bus was injured.
The side-view mirror on each bus was struck. Damage was estimated at $100 to each bus.
Seven hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $55,400 in six recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured and both cars were demolished in a collision at 11:43 a.m. Thursday at Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway and Florida Street, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Patricia Ann Pemberton, 44, of U.S. 117 Alternate, Dudley, and a passenger in the other car, Bridget Denise Faison, 40, of Wooten Street, Mount Olive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Pemberton was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was Lyndra Ann Faison, 39, of Wooten Street, Mount Olive. The cars were valued at $12,000.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $6,700 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at Cashwell Drive and the entrance to the Bank of America parking lot, police said. Nikole Guck, 16, of Ruby Road, was released after emergency-room treatment. Her driver, Luann Osborne, 36, of Scott Street, who was leaving the parking lot, was charged with a yield violation. The westbound motorist was identified as Jacqueline Pleshette Alston, 37, of Harris Street.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-truck wreck at 4:36 a.m. Thursday at U.S. 70 West and West Grantham Street, police said. One driver, Jarvis Lavan Sullivan Sr., 68, of Courtland Avenue, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Sullivan was turning across the four-lane divided highway and his pickup collided with an eastbound pickup driven by Joe Wright Kornegay, 49, of Brogden Road, Princeton.
*Damages were set at $12,200 in a two-truck, rear-end collision at 2:44 p.m. Thursday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, near Oak Forest Road, police said. One driver, Timmy Ray Barfield, 16, of Aldridge Store Road, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other motorist as identified as Ervin Carey Mewborn, 62, of Mark Edwards Road, LaGrange.
*Two people were injured and damages were put at $10,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:40 p.m. Monday on U.S. 13 near Nancy Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Hessie Parris Wynn, 84, and her passenger, Bobby Wynn, 58, both of Waldrop Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Allen Franklin Woodard, 46, of Westbrook Dairy Road, Four Oaks, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $9,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 8:10 a.m. Monday on N.C. 111 near Indian Springs Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Robert Sean Denny, 21, and his passenger, Veronica Velasquez, 26, both of Guadalupe Drive, Seven Springs, were released after emergency-room treatment. Denny was charged with following too closely after the car that he was driving collided with a truck parked partly on the road. The truck, registered to Xavier Montez Smith of Tommy's Road, had been involved in an earlier collision.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $25 in quarters and $15 in silver dollars were stolen Thursday from a home in the 200 block of Dillard Street, police said. The thief had damaged a window to get inside. No damage estimate was reported at the Carline Williams home.
*A total of $1,405 was stolen between Nov. 23 and Thursday from a home in the 300 block of Glenoaks Drive, police said. The resident, Robert Powell, said the money was to be used for Christmas presents.
Coin machine stolen
A coin-operated air compressor with about $25 was stolen between Wednesday night and Thursday from a convenience store, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The machine, valued at $2,500, was attached to a brick wall at the Friendly Mart store at 4664 U.S. 13 South. Damage to the wall was estimated at $50.
