Man charged with trying to rob stores
A 20-year-old man wanted by authorities on five robbery charges was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police without incident in the 400 block of North Virginia Street.
Ivan Devon Harvey Jr. of Birddog Lane, Dudley, was charged with three felony counts of armed robbery, two felony counts of attempted armed robbery and one count of misdemeanor assault.
Harvey
Harvey was accused of robbing three people on Nov. 2 when they were visiting people on Brownrigg Street, Investigator Dale Foster said.
Harvey also was accused of trying to rob two convenience stores on Tuesday, Foster said. But clerks foiled both holdups. The attempted robberies were recorded on surveillance video cameras in the stores.
In the first attempted robbery, a man asked for change for a $5 bill at the Spur gas station at 2000 N. William St., the report said. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man tried to grab the cash, but the clerk grabbed his arm, and he said he would shoot the clerk. The clerk resisted, and the man fled.
About two hours later, the man bought a cigar at The Pantry at 901 W. Grantham St., displayed a pistol and demanded cash, the report said. The clerk refused and told the man that he was being videotaped. He ran off.
Harvey was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $201,000 secured bond. His first court appearance to determine his legal representation was scheduled for Monday.
Housing authority police and a B-shift officers with a search dog assisted in the arrest. Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers also assisted in the investigation.
Man bites deputy
Two Wayne County sheriff's deputies said they were assaulted Thursday night during an investigation of a trespasser in the 100 block of Mill Creek Court.
Deputy Richard Lee Winders Jr. was bitten four times, and Charlie Thomas Arnold suffered an injured hand during a scuffle with a man. The deputies were treated in the Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room and released.
The man was subdued finally by the deputies with help from two state Highway Patrol troopers and three other sheriff's officers.
Steven Tyrone Barnes, 26, of Goldsboro was charged with one felony count of assault on a law-enforcement officer inflicting serious injury, one misdemeanor count of assault on a law-enforcement officer, one count of second-degree trespass and two counts each of injury to personal property and resisting arrest.
Barnes, who did not disclose a home address, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
The deputies said the assaults happened like this:
When Winders and Arnold arrived, they asked Barnes to put his hands on the railing outside of the home. Barnes refused and moved toward the officers. The deputies tried to get Barnes to comply, but he pulled away from them and said he was not drunk and had not been driving. The deputies grabbed Barnes, and he resisted, biting Winders and reaching for Arnold's weapon.
Arnold used pepper spray on Barnes, but it had no effect. Finally the deputies got Barnes on the ground and put handcuffs and shackles on him. Barnes and the deputies were taken by ambulance to the hospital. Barnes also was treated, released and jailed.
Theft
A 28-year-old man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with stealing $41,000 from his former roommate.
Luciano Marcias de Luna was served with the warrant in the Sampson County Jail in Clinton. He was brought to Goldsboro, given a $50,000 secured bond by a magistrate and returned to the jail.
Investigator G.N. Lynch said de Luna took the money in June while he was living in an apartment on North Spence Avenue. Luna then got a car, bought drugs and fled to Newton Grove, where he wrecked the car, officers said. He was arrested by the Highway Patrol and Sampson County authorities. He has been held in jail ever since.
Two injured
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $13,900 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured in a two-car collision at noon Thursday at Wayne Memorial Drive and a parking lot entrance, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Sarah Lee Lopez, 17, of Courtney Road, and her passenger, Alicia Chong, 17, of Livingston Drive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Neta Thornton Pate, 73, of Tommy's Road, was charged with a stoplight violation and expired registration. The report said Ms. Pate 's northbound car collided with the westbound auto that Ms. Lopez was driving. Damages were set at $1,900.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car crash at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 13 near Falling Creek Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Khristal Melinda Andrews, 30, of Old Smithfield Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said she was leaving a parking lot and the car that she was driving collided with a westbound auto driven by James McNeill Freeman, 43, of Wilmington.
*A driver swerved to miss a deer at 4:46 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 13 near Jordans Chapel Road, the Highway Patrol said. But Stephanie Antonette Kenion, 32, of Stone Mountain, Ga., lost control of the car, the report said, and it ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. The car, valued at $7,000 was demolished. No charges were filed.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Ten shirts, seven hats, a video camera, video games and two bicycles were stolen Thursday night from a home in the 1600 block of Tuskeegee Street, police said. The thief had damaged a door and three window to get inside. The resident, Lester Clinton, estimated the value of the stolen properly at $2,040 and damage at $250.
*A 12-gauge shotgun, a .22 single-shot rifle, a .22 pistol, a compact disc player and a video-game system were stolen Thursday from a home in the 600 block of Stronach Avenue, police said. The resident, Howard Lee Howell, put a $630 value on the stolen property.
Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Thursday night for a kitchen fire that caused about $500 in damages at a mobile home at 111 S. Running Deer Circle, a fire official said.
A neighbor put out the fire that damaged cabinets in Bertha Williams' home, Arrington Volunteer Fire Chief Randy Rogers said.
Nine Arrington firefighters answered the 6:58 p.m. alarm with three trucks. Five Dudley volunteers assisted with two trucks.
