The Empty Stocking Fund is a Christmas tradition that began in Goldsboro in 1912.
Every year goal has been set and met.
This year's aim is to raise $33,000 by Saturday, Dec. 18. That is the day 610 excited children will gather at United Artist Theater for the annual E.S.F. party.
The toys will be high-tech and the latest movie will be showing on a huge screen, but the children will not be much different than those who attended the first party 92 years ago.
For a little while, they will forget poverty and other unpleasant things in life.
They will stare in skeptical wonder at Santa Claus.
Their hearts will beat a little faster when it is their turn to choose a shiny new toy.
They will smile shyly while reaching for the traditional stockings filled with goodies and the gift-wrapped boxes of new clothes.
The best gift will be the memory of a morning filled with the true spirit of Christmas, made possible by the gifts from a caring community.
Donations may be mailed to the News-Argus, P.O. Box 10629, Goldsboro, 27532; or brought to the newspaper office at 310 N. Berkeley Blvd.
