Break-ins
A 34-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Sunday by Goldsboro police and charged with seven felony offenses in connection with larcenies and other misdemeanors after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
Anthony Lacel Battle was wanted on charges stemming from break-ins at New Hope United Methodist Church and a home on Palm Street.
Police Capt. John Biggins saw Battle in a green Nissan truck at about 3:15 p.m. in the 1100 block of Edgerton Street and followed him to Second and Cobb streets, the report said.
The suspect jumped from the truck and ran away. A-shift officers, Wayne County sheriff's deputies and a search dog found him and took him into custody.
Police said the truck had been reported stolen in Raleigh.
Battle was charged with two felony counts each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods and one felony count of possession of a stolen vehicle. He also was charged with driving while his license was revoked and resisting arrest.
Battle, who declined to give a home address, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $105,500 secured bond.
Body found
The body of a 24-year-old man was found before dawn Sunday hanging from a clothes rack in his closet, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
The victim was identified as Aidan James Michael Bain of 119 Trey Drive.
Bain came home at about 11 p.m. Saturday and went to his room, the report said. About 30 minutes later, his parents found the body. The death remains under investigation.
Teen hit by car
A 14-year-old was struck at 7:47 p.m. Saturday by a car on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway near the West Grantham Street exit, Goldsboro police said.
Michael Thompson, 14, of Astor Court was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized and transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was in fair condition today.
The driver, Jessie Henderson Holmes, 73, of West Pine Forest Road, Mount Olive, told police that he saw people in the right lane, then he moved to the left lane, struck the teen, pulled off the road and stopped.
The accident remains under investigation.
Traffic accidents
*A passenger was injured at 8:10 p.m. Sunday at South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway and Cross Street, police said. Toneri Faison, 18, of Norwayne School Road, Fremont, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, Anderita Olvia Faison, 20, of Norwayne School Road, Fremont, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other car was driven by Gerardo Moran Medina, 31, of Whispering Lane, Dudley. Damages were set at $3,000.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $10,000 at 4:15 a.m. Sunday on East Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway near the Wayne Memorial Drive exit, police said. Tony Young, 24, of Dollard Town Road was released after emergency-room treatment. Decarlo Leamon Dickerson, 24, of Thoroughfare Road, was charged with reckless driving. The pickup truck that he was driving ran off the right side and collided with a disabled car, flipping the auto over onto the highway. The car was registered to Eduardo N. Nunez of Jimmy Jones Lane, Mount Olive.
*Damages were estimated at $8,500 at 7:50 p.m. Saturday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Graves Drive, police said. A northbound driver making a left turn, Obispo Fermin Quino, 24, of Clover Drive, Mount Olive, was charged with a yield violation. His car collided with a southbound pickup truck driven by Clifton Ray Strange, 22, of Rose Street.
*A driver lost control of a car at 9:57 p.m. Saturday, and it ran off the left side of Patetown Road, careened back across the road, hit a mail box and a ditch then overturned, police said. The car sustained about $8,000 in damages. The driver fled. The car's owner, Tarshea Thomas Hudson of Franklin Street, was charged with allowing an uninsured car to be driven.
Robbery try
A masked man on Sunday barged into a mobile home in the 100 block of Hines Drive in an apparent robbery attempt, then ordered the resident to get on the floor and fired a shot at him, a Goldsboro police report said.
The resident, Quenton L. Battle, 33, was not struck. The bullet pierced the back door and a garbage can outside, the report said. Battle got up and fled next door and called for help.
The suspect, a black man, drove off. He was described as being 5-feet-9 with a slim build, and he wore dark pants and a shirt.
Safes stolen
Safes were stolen between Nov. 13 and Saturday from homes on Parkstown and South Beston roads, according to reports filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
A safe with jewelry, a two-carat diamond ring, a property deed, checks and other personal papers was stolen from a home in the 500 block of Parkstown Road. The resident, Mark S. Gray, estimated the value of the jewelry and the ring at $22,000 and the other property at $845.
A safe with about $25,000 in stocks, a house deed, personal papers and $300 was stolen from a home in the 800 block of South Beston Road. The resident, Royce Potter, put a $794 value on the other property.
The thief had damaged windows in each home to get inside. Damages totaled about $125.
Farm equipment theft
An estimated $10,365 worth of farm equipment was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from Mid-Atlantic Equipment Inc. at 3223 U.S. 70 West, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The stolen equipment included a 28-horsepower Branson tractor, a Branson front-end loader, a 16-by-6-foot trailer, a bush hog cutter and a box blade. The thief had cut a lock from a gate in order to enter the yard.
Moose Lodge theft
A thief cut a hole in the roof Saturday, entered the Moose Lodge at 800 W. Mulberry St. and then knocked out concrete walls to go into an office where the night's receipts were stored, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The suspect also damaged a roof tile and a locked cabinet and broke into a coin-operated poker machine, the report said.
The thief then fled with an undetermined amount of cash. Damages were estimated at more than $850.
Embezzlement
A 24-year-old woman from Dudley was arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with seven felony counts of embezzlement.
Tolisha Johnson Whitley of J.C. Price Drive was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond. She was accused of embezzling property on July 6.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Computer equipment, a Palm Pilot and $50 in coins were stolen Sunday from a home in the 1000 block of Eagles Nest Road, deputies said. The resident, Debra M. Heath, put a $1,381 value on the stolen property.
*A computer system, a .32 caliber handgun and a cordless phone were stolen after a window was smashed at a home in the 100 block of Fox Drive, deputies said. The resident, Stephen G. Witt, estimated the stolen property's value at $2,450 and damage at $100.
*A tattoo sticker vending machine was stolen after a door glass was shattered at Brooklyn Pizzeria at 2497 U.S. 117 South, deputies said. The machine was valued at $200.
*A electro-mechanical tool kit and tools used in cable television installation were stolen from a garage in the 200 block of Kelliwood Drive, deputies said. The property, owned by Time Warner of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,825.
*About $1,550 worth of damages was reported at a rental home in the 100 block of Sunflower Drive, deputies said. Paint was splashed on walls and carpet, the owner, Kenneth Earl Renn said.
*A blue 2003 Ford Expedition was stolen from a parking lot in the 500 block of North Berkeley Boulevard, Goldsboro police said. The owner, Linda A. Westpoint of Forestville, Md., said the vehicle was worth $35,000.
Missing
A 14-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Sunday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Tomesha O'Neal was described as black, 5-feet-2 and 145 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.
When she was seen last at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, she was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, a pink coat and brown and white boots. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
Correction
An article in Friday's Public Record on a traffic accident gave the incorrect age of Yvonne Smith. She is 68, not 78. The News-Argus apologizes for the error.
