Drugs cited as cause
in fatal shooting
Drugs were involved in the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old Dudley man, a Wayne County sheriff's official said today.
Capt. George Raecher made the comment but would not elaborate on a motive. He said a possible murder weapon has not been recovered.
Bowden
Billy Joe "B.J." Gregory was killed Oct. 15 with a single gunshot to the chest in his home at 201 Hazelwood Drive.
A 16-year-old Southern Wayne High School sophomore, James Marqui Bowden of Daffodil Drive, Dudley, was arrested Friday by sheriff's detectives and charged with the murder. He was being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail. His first court appearance was scheduled for today to determine his legal representation.
Raecher repeated today that a neighborhood canvass Oct. 16 was "beneficial" in making the arrest.
A witness had told officers that a white man was seen running from the home moments after a gunshot was fired.
Home invasion
MOUNT OLIVE -- Lloyd Bradford Brewer, 61, was treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a home invasion around 3 a.m. Saturday at his house on Smith Chapel Road.
His wife, Geraldine, told Mount Olive police a loud crash awakened her, and she found two men in dark clothing assaulting her husband with a duck vase and the end of a gun.
She said a third man, who was going out the back door, saw her and took her to the living room. The men took guns out of a display case, asked for money and left.
Police are looking for three black men.
The police report said entry was gained through a rear door, which was found damaged.
Items taken included shotguns, rifles, a pistol, about $3,300 in cash and the keys to Brewer's truck. The men did not take the truck. The 12 guns and cash totaled $17,400. Damage to the door was estimated at about $300.
Three hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $27,000 in four recent traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A Goldsboro driver was injured and both vehicles were demolished at 7:55 a.m. Saturday at Harris and South Best streets. Betty R. Braswell, 54, of Weaver Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Braswell also was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other driver was Reginald Duane Dixon, 39, of Grifton. The vehicles were valued at $8,000.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 at 7:39 p.m. Saturday on North Berkeley Boulevard near East Ash Street, police said. Dexter Lanier Howell, 18, of Sheridan Forest Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was identified as Michelle E. Truzy of Courtyard Circle.
*Two passengers were injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 at 7:23 p.m. Friday at South George Street and South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway. Ashley Rowe, 12, and Alex Rowe, 10, both of Timber Hollow Drive, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. Their driver, Promise Rowe Sr., 65, of Timber Hollow Drive, was going north. The other driver, Wilbur Price, 69, of Indian Springs Road, Seven Springs was charged with a stoplight violation.
*Damages were set at $7,500 at 10:55 a.m. Friday at North Madison Avenue and East Beech Street. An eastbound motorist, Minnie Ruth Pitt, 66, of North Claiborne Street, was charged with a stop-sign violation. The other driver was Margaret Ann Holloman, 54, of Edgerton Street.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A safe with $8,000, a gold chain and personal papers was stolen Saturday from a home in the 1800 block of North Beston Road. The thief had pried open a door to enter the John Alex Gray home. The other property was valued at $1,400.
*A laptop computer, 60 video games, a video-game system, 40 DVD movies, jewelry and sports apparel were stolen Sunday after a window was smashed at a home in the 400 block of Dollard Town Road. The resident, N.S. Ford, estimated the stolen property's value at $4,000 and damage at $150.
*A camera, a compact disc recorder and a charger have been stolen from a home in the 100 block of Mill Dam Lane. The resident, Harvey Glisson, put a $1,050 value on his property.
*A 36-inch television was stolen after a door was damaged at a home in the 1800 block of Hinnant Road. The resident, V.A. James, said the TV was worth $700.
*A military rifle, a grill, tools and a flashlight were stolen Saturday after a door was smashed and a musical instrument was damaged at a home in the 200 block of Peachtree Drive. The resident, Harold Franklin Watkins, estimated the stolen property's value at $167 and damage at $500.
*A CD player and two speakers were stolen from a home and a radio-compact disc player combination were taken from a car in the 100 block of Boseman Lane. The stolen property was valued at $330.
*A washer and two bicycles were stolen after a door and a window were smashed at a home in the 300 block of Durham Lake Road. The owner, Kenneth Williams, estimated the stolen property's value at $205.
*A generator and two chain saws were stolen from an unsecured storage building in the 1700 block of N.C. 111 North. The resident, George Paul King, put a $1,300 value on his property.
*A generator was stolen Friday from the 2900 block of Pikeville-Princeton Road. The resident, O.L. Crowley, said it was worth $3,000 and owned by a Wilson car dealership.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A purse and a checkbook were stolen Saturday after a car window was shattered in the 1800 block of Wayne Memorial Drive. The owner, Rebecca G. Waters of Princeton, said the purse was worth $50.
*A purple 1998 Dodge van was stolen Sunday from Southeastern Auto Brokers at 3708 E. Ash St. The van, valued at $2,500, had been repossessed.
Drug charge
A 35-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Sunday night by Goldsboro police and charged with two felony drug offenses and other crimes.
Anthony Mickens of Edgerton Street was charged with possession with intent to sell marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of selling and keeping marijuana. He also was charged with driving while his license was revoked, injury to real property and assault on a female. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,500 secured bond.
Missing
A 16-year-old boy has been reported missing by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Alvin Murchison III of 356 Old Grantham Road was described as black, 5-feet-10 and 140 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
When Murchison was seen last at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
