Hackett clarification
Wayne County Board of Education candidate Joe Hackett said that he supports teacher supplements as well as staff training. Hackett disputed a News-Argus story published Thursday on the Mount Olive candidate forum quoting him as saying schools are being hurt by the recent increase in supplements because the raises will be funded by cuts in staff development and training.
Hackett said he is a strong supporter of teacher supplements, but that they should not be funded with money earmarked for staff development and training. Hackett said he believes the school board should make money available for both staff development and supplements.
Bush wins
mock election
The votes are all in from the mock presidential election held earlier this week in the Wayne County public schools.
More than one million students participated nationwide in the event sponsored by Channel One school television station.
George W. Bush won the election with 55 percent of the popular vote and 393 electoral votes. He won all states in the Southeast region.
John Kerry won 40 percent of the popular vote and 145 electoral votes and won the majority of the states in the northeast region and California.
In North Carolina, 55.4 percent voted for Bush, 41 percent for Kerry, and 3.6 percent voted for Ralph Nader.
Of the respondents to the exit poll, 44 percent felt the war in Iraq was the most important election issue.
Pet costume contest
Pet Supplies Plus will sponsor its fifth annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 3 until 5 p.m.
The winners will be announced at 5 p.m. and must be present to win. Registration deadline is 4:45 p.m.
Entry fee is $5 per pet; proceeds will benefit the Wayne County Humane Society.
A panel of judges will select first-, second- and third-place winners. First place will win $250 in cash; second and third will win gifts. Oldies 107.9 will broadcast from the event.
Andy's Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers is the co-sponsor of the costume contest. People can pre-register their pets by going by Pet Supplies Plus at 319 N. Berkeley Blvd. Information: 751-2595.
Fall festival
The Goldsboro Recreation and Parks Department will hold its Fall Festival on Saturday.
The festival will start at noon and end at 4 p.m. at the Herman Park Center, with games and inflatables on the front lawn and inside the building. For $3 you get tickets for food, entertainment and all of the activities.
Headliners are singer Renee Hinson, Tribe of Judah and Jeffrey Head, and there will be about nine other groups. There will be candy, cotton candy, popcorn and caramel apples.
