Bowles coming

Erskine Bowles, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, will be at Wilber's Barbecue at noon Friday.

He will be meeting with tobacco farmers to discuss the tobacco quota buyout and other issues. The public is invited.

Ghost walk and barbecue

The Waynesborough Historical Village will be the host of two events this weekend: a barbecue fund-raiser and a ghost walk.

The open house and barbecue fund-raiser will be Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is $5 per plate, and the money will go toward several projects in the village.

"Shadows of Waynesborough," a ghost walk, will be held this Friday and Saturday and on Oct. 22 and 23 beginning at 7 p.m. Tours will be offered every 20 minutes. Groups of eight or more should call for reservations. The last tour starts at 9 p.m.

Historic ghost stories will be re-enacted during the walk. Children 15 and under should be accompanied by an adult, and it is not recommended for children under 7. The walk is $5 for everyone.

Parking is available through the front gate or in the lot beside the village. There are still parking attendants needed.

The village is at 801 U.S. 117 S. Bypass, across from the National Guard Armory. For more information, call 731-1653.

Museum trip planned

The Foundation of Wayne Community College will host a trip to see the "Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris: Masterpieces from The Baltimore Museum of Art" exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh on Thursday, Nov. 4.

Participants will meet at the college at 11 a.m. for a brief orientation. They will travel to the museum, have lunch and then take a docent-led tour of the exhibit. Cost is $22 for non-members of the museum and $15 for members. It covers transportation, lunch and the tour and can be paid the day of the trip.

Candidate forum

The Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a "Breakfast with the Candidates" on Oct. 21.

The event is set for 7:30 a.m. at Oliver's Railroad Grille.

The candidates planning to participate include those for statewide, county, legislative and congressional races.

Those interested in attending should call 658-3113 by noon on Oct. 18.

Bloodmobile

The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lowe's. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
