Tax free
The state sales-tax holiday began this morning and runs through Sunday night.
The third annual tax holiday weekend is designed to give parents of school children a break on school supplies and clothing.
Items that are tax free include clothings; sports and recreational equipment; school supplies such as books, paper, pens, pencils; and computers with a sales price of $3,500 or less. Printers and printer supplies are not included this year.
Correction
An error appeared in the story about Kiaris Thompson's Make a Wish Foundation trip to Orlando that ran in Thursday's News-Argus. His siblings were listed as step-siblings, which is an error. In addition, the picture's caption listed his brother, Adrielle, by the wrong name.
New attorney appointed
Vernon "Poo" Rochelle has been appointed the attorney for the N.C. Global TransPark Authority, Authority Vice Chairman Gene Conti announced Thursday.
Rochelle's appointment was effective Aug. 1. He replaces Judge Lew Llewellyn, who resigned July 19 to devote more time to a political campaign.
"Mr. Rochelle not only has had a long and illustrious legal career in our community, serving as legal counsel for the city of Kinston for many years, but he is also very familiar with the GTP through his decades of work with the city," said Conti.
"Of special importance will be Mr. Rochelle's ability to get up to speed quickly given his past involvement with matters relating to the GTP. This will make for a seamless transition in the authority's legal representation."
"As far as the GTP is concerned, it is business as usual. We are working diligently to attract new industry to the Global TransPark. We are pleased to have a lawyer of the stature of Mr. Rochelle join us in this endeavor," said Darlene Waddell, GTP executive director.
