Wallet theft leads
to credit card fraud
A woman's wallet was stolen Friday as she shopped at a Goldsboro store, and the thieves used her credit cards to run up a bill of more than $1,500.
Edna Hill of Seven Springs told Goldsboro police that the wallet was stolen between 11 a.m. and noon as she shopped at the bread counter at Wal-Mart. Mrs. Hill said another woman began a conversation with her and about fresh bread, and two other women were nearby.
Within an hour, the thief had used a credit card to buy $722.04 worth of property at Kmart on North Berkeley Boulevard and $838.56 from other Goldsboro businesses, police said.
The wallet, valued at $20, also contained about $35 and personal papers.
Alcohol raids
Twelve unidentified store clerks have been charged by state Alcohol Law Enforcement officers with selling alcohol to under-age customers.
Administrative violation reports also will be written against the stores and submitted to the state Alcohol Beverage Commission, officers said.
The stores cited were:
Food Lion No. 1692 at 219 N.C. 111 South, Short Stop Food Mart No. 75 at 404 N.C. 111 South, Save More No. 211 at 1903 E. Ash St., BK Mart at 2344 U.S. 117 South, Wilco No. 397 at 1221 Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway South and Eckerd Drug Store No. 8543 at 806 E. Ash St., Downeast Travel Center at 2600 U.S. 117 South, EZ Mart and Tackle at 2049 U.S. 117 South and The Pantry No. 921 at 1908 U.S. 117 South in Goldsboro; Arrington Mart at 1805 Bill Lane Blvd., Dudley; and Trade Mart No. 33 at 124 N.C. 55 West and Friendly Mart No. 6 at 819 N. Breazeale Ave. in Mount Olive.
Mobile home fire
A vacant mobile home at 4523-B U.S. 13 South was destroyed Monday night in a fire called suspicious by Wayne County authorities.
The home, owned by Jimmy Glenn Honeycutt of Clinton, was valued at $1,000, sheriff's deputies said.
Jordans Chapel and Grantham volunteer firefighters responded to the 6 p.m. alarm and put out the blaze. After ruling the fire suspicious, they asked for a deputy to investigate. Several patrol deputies and a sheriff's detective also arrived. Later Mel Powers, assistant Emergency Services coordinator, processed the scene.
The home was being sold, but the title had not been transferred, deputies said. The land was owned by Virginia Lee Darden of Preacher Henry Road, Faison.
Bathroom fire
A smoke detector awakened a family early Sunday and they scrambled outside and called 911 on a cell phone when they saw their home in the 300 block of Fields Road on fire. The family was not injured.
The fire was contained in a bathroom and did about $1,000 in damages, Nahunta Fire Chief Jay Howell said Monday.
Nahunta and Pikeville volunteers controlled the smoldering fire in 10 minutes and remained for about 30 minutes to ventilate the home and finish salvage work.
Trucker dies
The body of a 67-year-old man from Goldsboro was found Monday in his tractor-trailer in the Georgia-Pacific parking lot in Dudley, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The victim was identified as Ben Lewis of 3033 Thoroughfare Road. He drove for Guy Shavender Trucking Inc. of Pantego.
After an investigation, Detective R.T. Flores ruled that no foul play was suspected and attributed the death to natural causes.
Home break-in
Thieves broke into a vacant home in the 200 block of North Slocumb Street, brought in mattresses on which to sleep and stole four air conditioners and two bathroom fixtures, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The break-in and theft occurred between Friday and Monday. The stolen property, owned by Carolyn Daughtry of Hamilton, Va., was valued at $1,165.
The intruders had damaged a door, a window and three porch screens to get inside. Damages were estimated at $735.
Police also are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment and a NBA jersey were stolen Monday after a door glass was smashed at a home in the 300 block of Bright Street, police said. The resident, Pierre D. Hall, put a $460 value on his property. Damage was set at $50 to Reba Harris' home.
*A beige 1990 Chevrolet 2500 truck was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the 600 block of Greenbrier Drive, police said. The owner and resident, Brian Paul Maher, said the truck was worth $7,000.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Thieves cut a chain-link fence between Friday and Monday at Goldsboro Hog Farms at 1722 E. New Hope Road and then stole three pressure washers, sheriff's deputies said. The washers were valued at $5,350. Damage was set at $150.
*A silver 2004 Daytona gas scooter was stolen Monday from the 100 block of Short Street, deputies said. The resident and owner, Robert Lee Sellers, said his scooter was worth $2,000.
*A black and red, 20-horsepower Mercury outboard motor was stolen between June 23 and Monday from a storage barn in the 100 block of Jack Edmundson Road, deputies said. The owner, Johnny Edmundson of Goldsboro, put a $2,000 value on the motor.
