Gooden named college trustee
Michael D. Gooden, a retired Goldsboro doctor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been named to the Wayne Community College Board of Trustees.
Dr. Gooden, who last practiced at Wayne Women's Clinic and Wayne Memorial Hospital, was appointed by the Wayne County Board of Education.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with both his bachelor's and medical degrees. He was on the faculty at East Carolina University School of Medicine and Duke University Medical Center and held several positions with Wayne Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, including president in 1999.
Gooden continues to serve on the Wayne County Board of Health, after presiding as its chairman last year. A private pilot, he also was a member and chairman of the Goldsboro-Wayne Airport Authority in the 1990s.
"Dr. Gooden will bring many areas of expertise to our board," said College President Dr. Edward H. Wilson Jr.
Computer benefits
Sharon Syck, information technology director for Wayne County, will be the guest speaker at a forum to be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Gertrude Weil Auditorium of the Wayne County Public Library. Her topic is "How you can benefit from learning to use a computer."
The public is invited to this information session. The program is sponsored by a grant secured by Wayne County to promote digital literacy. Refreshments will be served.
Center Street Jam
The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation will host another Center Street Jam on Thursday, featuring beach music by the Coastline Band of Wrightsville Beach.
During intermission there will be a doughnut-dipping contest. Children can volunteer to dip as many doughnuts as they can within a certain amount of time and win a free doughnut-dipping party for 12.
The Jam will be held at the Waynesborough House parking lot on South Center Street from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The next Center Street Jam is scheduled for Aug. 5, featuring the music of Mardi Gras.
Emmy nomination
Goldsboro native Velton Ray Bunch has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series. This is his sixth nomination.
He was recognized for the music he did for the "Similitude" episode of "Star Trek Enterprise."
The Emmys will be awarded on Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium and will be broadcast on ABC. Garry Shandling will serve as host.
Change of command
There were two recent changes of command at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
Lt. Col. Francesa Vasta-Falldorf assumed command of the 4th Aeromedical Dental Squadron July 7 from Lt. Col. Alvis Headen. Lt. Col. Vasta-Falldorf comes from Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, where she was the dental flight commander.
Lt. Col. Lista Benson assumed command of the 4th Medical Operations Squadron on Wednesday from Lt. Col. Deborah Jones. Lt. Col. Benson comes from National Defense University, Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., where she attended the National War College.
Museum events planned
The Wayne County Museum has several educational and fun events coming up this month.
Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will be "Let's set up a lemonade stand," where participants will learn how to make lemonade the old-fashioned way and enjoy a cold glass of lemonade.
July 28 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. will be "Christmas in July," where participants will make old-fashioned crafts for Christmas.
For reservations, call 734-5023. There will be an activity fee of $1 per child to cover the supply cost. The museum is at 116 N. William St. in Goldsboro.
