Snake found
Goldsboro police have found a snake that they believe is a pet and want the owner to identify it.
Capt. Glenn Barnes said today that the snake was found June 12 on Azalea Drive. Anyone with information on the snake was asked to call police at 580-4253.
Barnes said neither the police nor the animal shelter has the facilities to keep the snake. If no one claims it, he said, it will be turned over to the Humane Society.
House fires
Unattended cooking was blamed for two weekend kitchen fires that damaged homes in eastern Wayne County.
Damages were estimated Sunday at $8,000 to a home at 314 Spring Creek Drive. Elroy Fire Chief Steve Mozingo said the fire burned kitchen cabinets and spread to the attic.
The home, owned by Century 21 Dees and Tyndall Realtors, was valued at $125,000. Contents were valued at $15,000. Damage was set at $5,000 to the home and $3,000 to contents.
Pinewood volunteers assisted Elroy in answering the 2:30 p.m. call.
A fire at 204 Parkwood Drive in the Hickory Hills subdivision was put out Saturday by the time firefighters responded to the 1 p.m. call. Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the home and $1,000 to contents, Mozingo said.
The identity of the occupants of the two homes was not immediately available.
Crash ends theft
A driver said he tried to stop another motorist from stealing his sport utility vehicle today. The SUV and the driver's pickup truck collided on North Carolina Street near West Ash Street, Goldsboro police said.
Donald Keith Benton, 47, of South Hillcrest Drive told police that the other driver lost control of the SUV at about 1:59 a.m., and it ran off the left side and smashed into a power pole. The other driver fled.
Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the pickup that Benton was driving, $8,000 to the SUV and $3,000 to the Progress Energy power pole. No charges have been filed.
In other collisions:
*Damages were estimated at $5,450 in a three-car collision at 11:38 a.m. Saturday on North William Street near Fedelon Trail, police said. Daniel William Silva, 43, of Hilton Place, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation after the rear-end collision. The other motorists were identified as Julia H. Williams, 48, of Rocky Mount and Curtis Ray Jackson, 62, of Waller Road, Mount Olive.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured at 2:41 p.m. Friday on North Berkeley Boulevard near East Ash Street, police said. Helen M. Taylor, 33, of East Walnut Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The other driver, Stephen Patrick Whisenant, 36, of South Hillcrest Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were set at $200.
*A pickup truck was demolished at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, when it ran off U.S. 70 near Beston Road and struck a tree stump, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, William Nicholas Rose Sr., 67, of Walnut Creek Drive, was not charged. The new pickup was valued at $25,000.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment, a bicycle and change were stolen Saturday after a window was smashed in a home in the 200 block of Fox Drive. The resident, Dean Scott Gehron, estimated the value of his property at $1,480.
*A golf cart and a trailer were stolen from the 600 block of N.C. 55 West. Victor Boykin said his property was worth $6,000.
*A laptop, its tool kit and software were stolen from a car in the 100 block of Pate Circle. Jonathan Paul Zimmer put a $1,000 value on his property.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Two chain saws were stolen after a lock was damaged at Suburban Tractor and Equipment Co. at 725 U.S. 117 North. The saws were valued at $689.
*Video-game equipment and six compact discs were stolen Friday after a window was smashed at a home in the 300 block of Workman Street. The resident, J.F. Lamb, estimated the property's value at $740.
