Victim identified
A man killed in a one-car wreck before dawn Sunday was identified Monday by the Highway Patrol as 25-year-old Daniel Schade of 1881 N.C. 111 North.
Schade was driving north at about 1:10 p.m. when he lost control of his speeding car, south of Daw Pate Road, the report said.
His passenger, Henry Lauture, 27, of Cuyler Best Road, also was injured. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said. His condition was not immediately available.
Based on the evidence at the scene, State Trooper Robert Thaxton estimated Schade's speed at 125 mph. The speed limit on the two-lane road is 55 mph.
Thaxton said the car ran off the right side, struck a driveway culvert, became airborne, then landed in a yard and overturned several times before stopping in the southbound lane. The car traveled about 425 feet after it had run off the road, the trooper said.
The 2003 Nissan, valued at $25,000, was demolished. Damage to the Arnold Jones yard was estimated at $300.
Meanwhile, a young woman killed in a single-car wreck Sunday reportedly was seven months' pregnant. The victim, Shereise Shantel Walls, 23, of 207 Little Dove Road, Pikeville, died in the 6:15 a.m. crash on Gurley Dairy Road.
Five hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damage was estimated at $20,000 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A pedestrian crossing North Herman Street near East Ash Street was struck by a car at 12:25 p.m. Monday, a Goldsboro police report said. The pedestrian, Anthony Dwight Stokes, 28, of East Elm Street, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, police said. His condition was not immediately available. The driver, Kristen Jennifer Varnell, 27, of Millbrook Village Drive, was not charged, but her car sustained about $500 in damages.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car collision at 12:40 p.m. Saturday at Wayne Memorial Drive and Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Geraldine M. Margiotta, 53, of Antioch Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Troopers said the other motorist, Donny Ray Giles, 19, of Miller Street, was slowing to make a left turn.
*Four people were injured in a two-car crash at 8:15 p.m. Friday at U.S. 13 and Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Ian Cole Jacobs, 17, of West Raintree Lane, and the other motorist, Lagislia Bernadetta James, 29, of Williamston, and her passengers, Shontell Horton, 18, of Washington, N.C., and Crystal Swain, 15, of Greenville, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, the report said. Their conditions were not immediately available. Jacobs was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said Jacobs had started a left turn and the car that he was driving collided with an oncoming, southbound auto that Ms. James was operating. Damages were put at $12,000.
*A car struck a cow at 2:20 a.m. Friday on Mitchell Road near Emmaus Church Road, and the driver was injured, the Highway Patrol said. Carlos Rodriquez Torres, 29, of Old Fort Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. Damage was put at $2,000 to the car. No charges were filed.
Drug charges
Two men were arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with felony drug offenses after an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne Crime Stoppers.
Severiano Thornton, 27, and Sakima Jivin Etheridge, 26, were arrested after a search of their home in the 800 block of North Madison Avenue. Two Wayne County Sheriff's deputies and their dogs assisted in the search.
Thornton and Etheridge were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $10,000 secured bonds.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $2,299 worth of property was stolen Monday after a door glass was smashed at an apartment in the 700 block of North Spence Avenue, police said. The resident, Richard G. Szmetterowicz, reported the theft of a stereo system, a watch, a television, a video cassette recorder, a bicycle, a DVD, five DVD movies, a boom box and a suitcase. Damage was put at $300.
*A generator, tools, a ladder and a vacuum cleaner were stolen between Friday and Monday after a van window was shattered at Convenient Glass at 901 S. Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, police said. The property, owned by Carl Sawrey of Goldsboro, was valued at $2,384. Damage was set at $200.
*A white, four-door 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity was stolen before dawn today from the 300 block of Courtyard Circle, police said. The resident and owner, Chree Maria Booker, put a $1,000 value on the car.
Embezzlement
A 30-year-old man from Clinton was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony embezzlement.
Cesar Yanez Ventura, a stock room clerk, was accused of taking a case of orange juice from his employer, Pate-Dawson Co. of Goldsboro, Detective Lt. Thomas Effler said. Ventura was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Missing
Two people were reported missing Monday to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
*Tina Marie Condon, 44, of 2123 Rosewood Road was described as white, 5-feet-7 and 120 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair. No clothing description was available. She said May 29 that she was coming from Louisiana but has not returned.
*Jermaine O. Etheridge, 13, of 113 Biltmore Drive was described as black, 5-feet-3 and 110 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. When he was seen last at 3 a.m. Monday, he was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
Anyone with information on the location of either person was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
