MOUNT OLIVE -- A 15-year-old girl from Mount Olive has been charged by Wayne County sheriff's deputies with felony possession of a handgun on school grounds.
The students were checked Friday with a metal detector before they entered the Southern Academy alternative school in Mount Olive. Deputy Keith Hartzog then searched a bus and found the .380 pistol wedged in the last seat of the vehicle.
The bus driver and other students identified the student who had occupied the seat. Officers said the girl later confirmed that she had brought the gun to school. She was identified in police records as Zeltrice Seaberry of Orchard Run Drive in Mount Olive. She was charged in a juvenile petition.
