SNOW HILL -- The 21-year-old son of a Goldsboro police officer was fatally shot Saturday night, and a suspect was arrested about 12 hours later.
The victim was identified by authorities as Raymond Earl Parker Jr., 21, of 313 Williams Loop Road, Kinston. He is the son of Goldsboro police Cpl. Teresa Cox.
Parker was struck in the chest with a shot from a handgun, Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith said Monday. The shooting occurred at about 9:20 p.m. at Gray John Mobile Home Park, which is about five miles south of Snow Hill off U.S. 158.
Tyrone Shackleford, 26, of Jason School Lane, Snow Hill, was charged at about 9:40 a.m. Sunday by Greene County sheriff's deputies at Ramblewood Mobile Home Park in Snow Hill.
Smith said Shackleford was with his girlfriend when he was apprehended without incident.
Shackleford was charged with second-degree murder. He was placed in the Greene County Jail without bond.
The sheriff said witnesses had provided useful information that led to Shackleford's arrest. A nearby resident had heard the gunshot and called 911.
"We got information that it might be gang-related over a girl," Smith said. "That's about all I want to say about it right now."
Greene County investigators are working with special agents from the State Bureau of Investigation in collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses in order to determine what had happened.
Shackleford was to have a first appearance in Greene County District Court to determine his legal representation.
Funeral arrangements for Parker are pending at McIntyre Funeral Home in Goldsboro.
