Tax list
Those who have not paid their Wayne County property taxes are listed in an insert today's News-Argus.
The list is provided by the Wayne County Tax Office and is for accounts not paid as of May 6.
Annexation legislation
The Wayne County Republican Party is calling for the state to make it tougher for cities to annex property.
The party's executive committee voted last week to send a petition to the N.C. General Assembly to ask that the state's annexation laws be changed. The GOP wants to prohibit any city or town from annexing property against the property owners' wishes unless it has first gotten the approval of the county commissioners.
The GOP also asked that counties not be allowed to adopt a "resolution of support" unless they have first held public hearings and conducted referendums in the areas considered for annexation.
N.C. Rep. Cary Allred, a Republican from Burlington, introduced similar legislation last year, but his bill never made it out of committee. The Legislature is not expected to take up annexation laws this year in the so-called "short session."
