Winn-Dixies to stay
The three Winn-Dixie stores in Wayne County are safe at this point from being in the group of 156 stores and three distribution centers that the company plans to either sell or close this year, according to a company spokesman.
Joanne Gage with the company's public relations department said Friday that Goldsboro is in one of the core markets and not in the one the company is leaving.
Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. announced Friday that it plans to close or sell 156 stores over the next year, trimming 10,000 jobs from its payroll, according to an Associated Press report. One of the distribution centers includes one in Clayton that employs 378 people.
The affected stores are in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. Distribution centers in Sarasota, Fla., and Louisville, Ky., will also be closed. The closings and sales will leave the Jacksonville, Fla.-based supermarket chain with 922 stores and about 90,000 employees.
Ms. Gage said there is a possibility the Wayne County stores could be closed or sold, but she does not expect it at this point.
The local stores are at 211 N. Berkeley Blvd., 2441 U.S. 117 S. at Mar Mac, and 1805 Wayne Memorial Drive.
Spring clean ends
The city of Goldsboro's annual spring cleanup ended Friday. Any resident that discards items at the curb without notifying the Sanitation Division first, will be fined.
When discarded furniture, appliances, mattresses and other bulky items are placed at the curb without making collection arrangements, a $25 fine will be assessed.
WCC registration
New students planning to attend Wayne Community College in the summer can register for classes on Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m.
The next opportunity to register for summer classes will be Monday, May 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both new and returning students can register at that time. Classes start the next day and run through July 27.
Prior to registering, new students must complete the enrollment process, including submitting an application, having all transcripts sent to the college and taking placement tests.

Habitat auction
Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro Wayne County will hold a silent benefit auction from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Habitat Home Store, 124 E. Mulberry St. in downtown Goldsboro.
Many unique items will be available, including things like pianos, shelves, roll top desks, custom made furniture, collectibles, fine china and assorted crystal. There will also be unusual stuff, like a biplane ride for a 20-minute tour of Wayne County. For information, call 736-9550.
