Fremont shooting

under investigation

FREMONT -- The murder of a young Fremont man early Friday remains under investigation by Fremont police and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Nicholas Lonte "Red" Jones, 25, of 309 W. Branch St. was shot fatally at about 7 a.m. about a block away in a home at 310 S. Pender St.

Chief Ben Reid said today that no one has been charged with the shooting. Other investigators said a weapon was recovered at the home.

Sheriff Carey Winders had said that he did not know if Jones had entered the home illegally or was an invited guest. Jones' car was left at the home with the doors opened.

Jones had a long criminal record with convictions for weapons, drugs and traffic offenses.

Traffic accidents

Eleven people were injured and damages were estimated at $73,050 in nine recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.

*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 10:19 p.m. Sunday on A Street near North George Street, Goldsboro police said. Barbara J. Sturm, 50, of Clarence Court was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was riding with Eric Charles Sturm, 50, of Clarence Court. The other driver, Sadie Jane Smith, 44, of Rouse Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation after, police said, she had started a left turn and the vehicle that she was driving had collided with the Sturms' oncoming car.

*A westbound motorcyclist from Goldsboro was injured in a crash with a car at 1 p.m. Friday at West Ash Street and North Virginia Street, police said. Brandon Patrick Leclerc, 24, of Windsor Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. Juanita Allen Atkinson, 84, of Murray Street was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $1,600.

*A driver was injured at 12:23 p.m. Friday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Lockhaven Drive, police said. Rick Mason, 43, of Suttons Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. Daniel Joseph Shaunnessy, 24, of West Lockhaven Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were put at $100.

*Two people were injured at 7:34 a.m. Thursday on O'Berry Road near Club Knolls Road, the Highway Patrol said. Heather Michelle Otellio, 17, and her passenger, Samantha Lee Otellio, 14, both of O'Berry Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed after the car ran off the road and overturned. The car, valued at $3,000, was demolished.

*A motorcyclist was injured and charged and his bike was demolished at 12:45 a.m. Thursday on Pineview Cemetery Road near Emmaus Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. John Raymond McNary, 24, of Camp Jubilee Road, Seven Springs, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was charged with reckless driving after the motorcycle ran off the left side in a curve, struck a ditch and stopped down an embankment. The bike was valued at $7,000.

*A man lost control of his dirt bike and was injured at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on Fire Tower Road near Ballance Road, the Highway Patrol said. DeCandice Antwon Pitt, 19, of South Goldsboro Street, Fremont, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed and no operator's license. Damage was fixed at $50.

*A driver of a tractor-trailer was injured and his rig was demolished at 11:48 a.m. Tuesday on O'Berry Road near Herring Road, the Highway Patrol said. David Earl Lambert, 56, of Cedar Lake Drive was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. He was charged with reckless driving after the vehicle ran off the right side and turned over. The truck was valued at $40,000.

*A driver was injured and the car she was driving was demolished at 4:32 p.m. Tuesday on Faro Road near Big Daddy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Amanda Ann Guthrie, 16, of East Main Street, Eureka, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed after she had lost control of the car in a curve and it struck several mail boxes and a power pole. Total damages were estimated at $10,300.

*Both drivers were injured and damages were set at $5,500 at 3:43 p.m. April 19 on Arrington Bridge Road at the entrance to Uchiyama America, the Highway Patrol said. Kiara Nicole Tomlin, 20, of Waters Street and Janice W. McCullen, 56, of Casey Mill Road, Dudley, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Tomlin was charged with a yield violation.

Investigations

Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:

*An estimated $5,800 worth of property was stolen after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Brandy Drive. The resident, Richard Herbert Spencer, said computer equipment, a satellite system, two big-screen televisions, a stereo tuner and many DVDs, compact discs and videotapes were stolen.

*A two-way radio and tools were stolen from two tractors and a radio also was damaged in a field near Blackjack Church and Stevens Mill Road. The owner, Bruce Howell, estimated his property's value at $2,300.

Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:

*A thief damaged a door to a home in the 4000 block of McLain Street, swiped a car key and took the resident's white 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Owner Clifton Ray Taylor said the car was worth $5,000.

*A red and white Honda dirt bike was stolen after the padlock and chain were cut in the 700 block of North James Street. The resident and owner, Decoris Raynor, put a $1,000 value on the bike.

Man wanted

A 20-year-old Goldsboro man is wanted by Goldsboro police on two felony weapons offenses.

Jonathan Devon "Little John" Lofton, whose last-known address was in the 400 block of West Grantham Street, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury and discharge of a weapon into occupied property. He was described as black, 5-feet-4 and 120 pounds.

Anyone with information on his location was asked to call police Investigator M.K. Horstmann at 580-4213 or Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for a cash reward.

Motorcycles stolen

A 22-year-old man from Dudley was arrested Friday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with four felony offenses in connection with the theft of three motorcycles.

Demetrius Royall of Timothy Street was charged with two counts of larceny and one county each of breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.

Royall was arrested after an investigation of a break-in April 18. The motorcycles were recovered, and more arrests are possible, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. D-shift patrol deputies assisted in the case.

Drug charge

Goldsboro police arrested a 47-year-old Goldsboro woman Sunday night and charged her with felony and misdemeanor drug offenses.

Angela Hood Hancock, 47, of Farmview Lane was charged with possession of narcotics and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
