Two motorists charged
with reckless driving
Both drivers were charged with reckless driving after a two-vehicle collision Wednesday on Salem Church Road near Fedelon Trail, a Goldsboro police report said.
One northbound driver, Thomas Edgar Bauer Jr., 32, of Robin Lake Drive, Dudley, was passing a pickup truck at about 9:20 a.m. in a no-passing zone, the report said. The other motorist was identified as Robert Edward Mooring III, 20, of Plantation Road.
As Bauer tried to get back in the right lane, the car he was driving collided with Mooring's northbound pickup, the report said. One vehicle then slid off the right side and struck a brick wall at 1808 Salem Church Road, the report said.
Bauer also was charged with improper passing.
A nearby resident said she had heard the engines of both vehicles racing, the report said. Police estimated the speed of both vehicles at 70 mph in the 45-mph zone.
Vehicle damages were estimated at $2,300.
In other collisions:
*Two passengers were injured in a one-car wreck at 5 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 70 near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Olivia Burns, 91, of Stoney Creek Church Road was listed today in stable condition in intensive care at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Rose Graham, 35, of Jacksonville, was treated and released from the hospital. Their driver, Gregory Casanova Brown, 47, of Stoney Creek Church Road, was charged with reckless driving. His car ran off the left side out of control in a left curve, then careened back off the right side, struck a ditch, then continued into a field, struck a utility pole supporting a billboard and stopped. Damage was fixed at $3,500 to the car.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $10,800 in a three-car collision at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Old Mount Olive and Genoa roads, the Highway Patrol said. Helen Carraway, 59, of Southern Plaza Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Troopers said her driver, Paul Hobbs Carraway, 63, of Southern Plaza Drive, was going north and his car was struck by an eastbound auto driven by Zachary John Vega, 18, of Hunters Creek Drive. The impact sent the car that Vega was driving into a stopped, eastbound auto operated by Heather Marie Tucker, 19, of Mobile Circle, Dudley. Vega was charged with a yield violation at stop sign.
There has been a correction made to the following report:
State Highway Patrol Trooper J.S. Smith said a tractor-trailer that was involved last week in a wreck on N.C. 55 was not passing a car driven by Mount Olive Mayor B.R. Huggins. Smith said the trucker, Victor Padgette of Wallace, had swerved to the left to avoid an oncoming, westbound vehicle that had hydroplaned on the wet road. The westbound driver, Jose Angel Mendoza of Warsaw, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.

*Mount Olive Mayor B.R. Huggins, 79, of Crest Drive escaped injury Tuesday in a three-vehicle collision on N.C. 55 near Mark Herring Road, the Highway Patrol said. Trooper J.S. Smith said the collision happened like this: A tractor-trailer, driven by Victor Glenn Padgette, 43, of Wallace, was passing Huggins' car at 1:31 p.m. At the same time, an oncoming sport utility vehicle hydroplaned on the wet road, crossed the center line and collided with Huggins' car, forcing it into the right ditch. Padgette swerved his big rig to the left in an attempt to avoid the out-of-control car driven by Jose Angel Mendoza, 30, of West Chelly Street, Warsaw. But the car went sideways, the vehicles collided, and both ran off the road into a ditch. Mendoza was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Damages were estimated at $2,500 to Padgette's rig, $7,500 to Huggins' car and $7,000 to the SUV. The car and the SUV were demolished.
Lawn mower theft
Almost $11,000 worth of lawn-care equipment was stolen Wednesday from Johnson Lawn Care at 102 Hooks Court, Pikeville, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
The property included a 16-foot trailer, a lawn tractor with a 52-inch deck, a 35-gallon gas tank, a sprayer, two weed trimmers, a backpack blower, two tool boxes, weed killer and other tools. The property was valued at $10,967.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Three handguns were stolen after a desk was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Oak Circle Road, deputies said. The resident, David Lee Porter, did not know when the firearms were stolen. No forced entry was found at the home. The handguns -- a .38, a .22 and a 9-millimeter -- were valued at $330. Damage was set at $30.
*About $4,800 worth of property was stolen between March 30 and Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 500 block of Pinkney Church Road, deputies said. The property included a 50-inch television, a side-by-side refrigerator, a stove, a dishwasher, a home security system and a microwave oven. Damage was set at $400.
*An air compressor and tools were stolen between Saturday and Wednesday from a tool shed in the 1300 block of New Hope Road, deputies said. The resident, Jerry Walker Wells, put a $450 value on his property. Damage to a door was estimated at $100.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $5,010 worth of property was stolen Wednesday after an apartment door was damaged in the 1400 block of South John Street, police said. The resident, Michelle Y. Hines, reported the theft of 200 compact discs, 60 DVDs, a DVD player, a stereo system, a piggy bank with money and a bracelet.
*Video-game equipment was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a window was smashed at the Professional Touch store at 402 N. Berkeley Blvd., police said. The property was valued at $450, and damage was set at $100.
