Drug charges
A Goldsboro couple was arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with drug violations in their home in the 400 block of Odell Street in Goldsboro. Officers also seized three pounds of marijuana during their search.
Lafonte Tyon Moses, 28, was charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and felony maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $55,000 secured bond.
Angel M. Hagans, 27, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and misdemeanor maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana. She was released from custody on a $7,000 unsecured bond.
Barn destroyed
An old tobacco barn used for storage was destroyed and a tractor was damaged Thursday in a fire at 586 Selah Church Road, a Grantham fire official said.
A pile of trash and pine straw was being burned on the Jim Daniels property. The fire got out of control and spread to the barn and the tractor, Grantham Assistant Fire Chief Richard Proctor said.
The barn was valued at $5,000. The tractor, valued at $3,000, sustained $750 in damages, Proctor said.
Eleven Grantham firefighters answered the 3:29 p.m. call with three trucks and needed more than an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work. Jordans Chapel volunteers assisted.
Passenger injured
A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 Thursday in two traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 11:35 a.m. Thursday the Tanglewood Mobile Home Park off Central Heights Road, police said. William Randolph, 18, of Central Heights Road was released after emergency-room treatment, a Wayne Memorial Hospital spokeswoman said. He was riding with Valentina Maria Achille, 38, of Central Heights Road. The other driver, Rogelio Emulio Navarro Recarte, 26, of Central Heights Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $2,000.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 4:16 p.m. Thursday at North Spence Avenue and Mall Road, police said. One driver, Debra Packer Gills, 47, of South Andrews Avenue, was charged with a stoplight violation. The other motorist was identified as Catherine B. Byrd, 52, of Forest Hills Drive.
Theft at golf club
An estimated $2,000 worth of property was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from Southern Wayne Country Club, according to a report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
An eight-horsepower push blower, an electric charger, an air compressor and a push lawn mower were reported stolen.
The suspect had cut a fence at the maintenance compound and tried to remove a lock from a gate and pry open a door to the maintenance building but was not successful, deputies said. Damage was estimated at $312.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A thief smashed a car door window and handle between Wednesday and Thursday, causing about $400 in damages, in order to steal $35 worth of property, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Cassandra Renee Robert of Mimosa Street, said baby clothes and diapers were stolen from the car, owned by Darius Lee Pemberton of Goldsboro.
*A compact disc player, a portable CD player, a bracelet, tennis shoes, five baseball caps, six shirts and two pairs of pants were stolen Thursday after a door was pried open at a home in the 100 block of Ellis Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, V.A. McCoy, put a $679 value on the property.
*Video games, a game player and a speaker were stolen Thursday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Curlew Street, deputies said. The resident, Mack D. Westbrook, estimated his the value of his property at $520 and damage at $100.
*A video-game player and a video cassette recorder were stolen Thursday after a door was forced open at a home in the 100 block of Poandl Drive, deputies said. The resident, Walter Allen Parker, estimated his property's value at $255.
*A total of 110 car rims were stolen between Tuesday and Thursday from Rohr Chemical Co. at 694 Sheridan Forest Road, deputies. The rims were valued at $1,100.
Negligence suit
The family of a Wayne County man who was killed in a 2003 traffic wreck is suing the other driver and her company for negligence.
Sandy Woodard, the executrix of the estate of her husband, Frank Woodard, is seeking more than $10,000 in damages in her suit against Chrystal West Shearin of Eureka and Royster Inc., a Clayton company that does business as Merry Maids of Goldsboro.
The suit, filed in the Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office, alleges that the collision happened like this:
Woodard, the victim, was driving his car north on Wayne Memorial Drive at about 8:30 a.m. Feb. 10, 2003, and the defendant, Ms. Shearin, was driving her car south. But Ms. Shearin's car ran off the right side, came back on the road, crossed the center line and struck Woodard's auto head-on. Woodard was hospitalized but died about two weeks later from his injuries.
The plaintiff contends that Ms. Shearin violated several traffic laws, including exceeding a safe speed, reckless driving and driving left of center.
Goldsboro lawyer Tim Haithcock represents Ms. Woodard, who lives in Grantham. The defendant has not filed an answer to the suit.
Malpractice suit
A Wayne County couple is suing a Goldsboro doctor and his business and a physician's assistant for more than $10,000 for medical malpractice.
Timothy E. Hatcher and his wife filed the suit against Dr. Karlus C. Artis, Physicians Thera Care Inc. and Jerry M. Shipman in the Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office.
Hatcher contends that he was treated by the defendants between January and November in 2001 for stomach problems following surgery. Despite several changes in his medication, Hatcher alleges that he got no relief and went to a specialist.
The specialist then recommended surgery by another doctor, who found colon cancer. Hatcher was treated in Durham for the disease.
Because Dr. Artis and Shipman did not diagnose Hatcher's colon cancer in a timely manner, the suit alleges, Hatcher had to undergo additional surgeries, procedures and pain. The suit contends that Artis, his clinic and Shipman did not provide care in accordance with the usual standards of practice.
The Hatchers are represented by lawyer Thomas E. Barwick of Raleigh. The defendants have not replied to the lawsuit.
Missing
A 16-year-old boy was reported missing Thursday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Brandon Lee Shelby of 110 Joyce Place, Dudley, was described as white, 5-feet-9 and 190 pounds with short blond hair, hazel eyes and a medium build.
When he was seen last earlier this week, he was wearing a gray hooded shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
