City hires planner
Randy Guthrie joined the Goldsboro Planning Department Wednesday as its new planning director.
The position was left vacant in December when Don Chatman retired. Guthrie's most recent employment was in Cary, where he spent the last year as principal planner for the town.
Before that, he was the planning director for the town of Smithfield.
Pig update
The Arts Council of Wayne County held a workshop Tuesday night to discuss possible locations for the rest of the pig sculptures in its "When Pigs Fly" public art and fund-raising project.
Locations were chosen, and board members and participants in the project will now check to see if the locations can be used.
Some pigs have already been placed, including one Tuesday at City Hall in Goldsboro.
Monetary sponsorships continue to be needed. People interested in contributing can call the Arts Council at 736-3300. All sizes of donations are accepted.
Author to speak
Author Jonathan Farlow will be at the Wayne County Public Library Tuesday to read from his first novel, "Holy War."
The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Gertrude Weil Auditorium.
"Holy War" is a slightly irreverent satire of the world of fear that we presently find ourselves in. Both Daniel McDaniel and the locals of Welbourne County, who think that they are "onto" the supposed terrorists, find themselves in a world where they are not in control of their own lives. They try various methods to regain control, with varying levels of success.
Farlow is a graduate of Wingate University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he received a master's degree in library and information studies. He is a reference librarian at the Randolph County Public Library. He lives in Archdale, with his wife, Kathy, and daughter Sara.
