RALEIGH -- Hundreds of middle- and high-schoolers, including those from Rosewood High School, are preparing to compete in district hunter safety tournaments, sponsored by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
The tournament for District 3, which encompasses 11 eastern Piedmont counties, will take place Saturday at the Boys and Girls Club Camp in Stanhope. Winning school teams and individuals will advance to the state tournament next month. Competitive events include rifle, archery, shotgun and muzzleloader shooting and a test of hunter skills and orienteering.
The Wildlife Commission launched the hunter safety tournaments more than 25 years ago as a way to promote hunter education and firearms safety.
Schools sending teams to the District 3 tournament are as follows:
*Halifax County -- Northwest High School
*Johnston County -- North Johnston High School
*Nash County -- Southern Nash Senior High School
*Northampton County -- Northeast Academy
*Wake County -- East Wake High School
*Wayne County -- Rosewood High School
*Wilson County -- Fike High School and Hunt High School.
The state tournament will take place on Saturday, April 24, at 4-H Camp Millstone in Richmond County, near Ellerbe.
