Rabies clinic
A series of rabies vaccination clinics will be held in Wayne County over the next two weekends.
The first clinic will be held Saturday at Eastern Wayne High School from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Later that day, a clinic will be held at Southern Wayne High School from 1 to 3 p.m.
On Saturday, March 20, the morning clinic will be held at Grantham Elementary School from 8:30 to 10:30. The afternoon clinic on March 20 will be held at the Old Pikeville School from 1 to 3.
The cost for the vaccination is $5 per animal, whether it's a cat or a dog.
The owner of every dog and cat over four months of age is supposed to have the animal vaccinated against rabies. Any animal receiving its first rabies vaccine will receive another dose one year later, and every three years after that. Proof of prior rabies vaccination is required to receive the three-year vaccination. If proof is not provided, a one-year vaccination will be given.
Same-sex wedding
Two women came to the Wayne County magistrate's office last week and asked the on-duty magistrate if he were marrying gay and lesbian couples. Magistrate Frank Edmonds told the two that, unlike other states and municipalities, the North Carolina legislature and courts have not approved the marriage of same-sex couples.

The Business and Industry Center of Wayne Community College and The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce present the following free seminars this month in the college's Dogwood building, Room 145:
