Tip leads to car break-in arrest
A 41-year-old man from Greenville was arrested Sunday by Goldsboro police after a citizen reported a vehicle break-in at a restaurant parking lot on North Spence Avenue.
Darrell Delon Cooke was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond on the three felony offenses.
Officers A.R. Fowler, J.V. Rodgers and M. Taylor and Capt. Jeff Stewart arrived quickly after the 3:30 p.m. call at Applebee's. The caller's detailed description of the suspect and his vehicle enabled the officers to block off all escape routes and arrest the man at North Spence Avenue and Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, as he tried to flee, police said.
Cooke was accused of smashing a window and breaking into a truck owned by a restaurant employee, Kenneth Steen of Goldsboro. About $3,490 worth of property, including 30 compact discs, a radar detector, a book bag with books and a wallet with personal papers, was recovered. Damage was set at $175.
Clerk tied up; store robbed
Three armed men on Saturday night tied up a store clerk, forced three employees into a bathroom and then stole an undetermined amount of money and other property, a Goldsboro police report said.
The suspects entered El Hispano at 1004 S. George St. at about 6:30 p.m., appeared to be shopping and then confronted the employees, police said.
The robbers, all Hispanic men, stole three leather coats, a telephone and 70 calling cards, valued at a combined $1,030, from the store, and two bracelets, a necklace and a wallet with cash from the clerk. The jewelry was valued at $600.
One wore a black shirt, black hat and tan pants. Another wore a red shirt, and the third wore all black. They fled north on George Street.
Seven hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured in five recent traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*A child was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 4:36 a.m. today on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway South near West Elm Street, Goldsboro police said. Skylar P. Yancy, 3, of Bolling Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The driver, Anika Christina McQueen, 20, of Bolling Drive was charged with a child-restraint violation. Her northbound sport utility vehicle ran off the left side, came back on the road, ran off the left side again into the median and overturned, police said. The SUV, valued at $4,500, was demolished.
*A driver from Ohio was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 9:10 a.m. Saturday in a parking lot in the 2800 block of Cashwell Drive, police said. Rosalie Williams, 44, of Cincinnati was released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Williams and the other driver, Victoria A. Gilbert, 26, of 11th Street, were backing from parking places and their vehicles collided. Each was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $350.
*Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 6:06 p.m. Friday at Royall Avenue and Sunburst Drive, police said. The drivers, William Thomas Poland, 21, of Darrell Road, LaGrange, and Bobby Ray Williams, 28, of Stagecoach Lane, Dudley, and Williams' passenger, Leslie Davis, 26, of Pate Circle, were released after emergency-room treatment. Poland was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $2,000.
*A northbound driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 9:15 a.m. Friday on North Berkeley Boulevard near a Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway ramp, police said. Mary Shaw Flanagan, 79, of Greenfield Cemetery Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist who was leaving a parking lot, David Edward Carter, 18, of Nahunta Road, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were fixed at $3,000.
*A southbound driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 9:35 p.m. Friday at North Berkeley Boulevard and East Ash Street, police said. Jessica L. Hochmuth, 26, of Kelly Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Kenneth Lawrence Lee Ueland, 18, of Wright Brothers Avenue, was charged with failure to reduce speed and no liability insurance after the rear-end crash. Damages were estimated at $410.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Pots and pans, two televisions, a microwave oven, a stereo system and small kitchen appliances were stolen between Jan. 3 and Sunday from a storage unit at 335 Stoney Creek Church Road, sheriff's deputies said. Barbara F. Powell of Kenly put a $1,005 value on her property. The thief had cut a lock to steal the items.
*A cellular phone and $20 were stolen Saturday after a window was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Pearl Street near Dudley, deputies said. The resident, Carlos Hilario Ramirez, said the phone was worth $50. No damage estimate was available.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Thieves smashed a door glass and broke open a safe between Sunday and dawn today at Andy's Cheesesteaks at 400 N. Spence Ave., police said. Damage was set at $550. It was not known if anything had been stolen.
*A car was vandalized and a 52-inch television and a mirror were smashed in an apartment in the 400 block of East Mulberry Street, police said. The resident, Sophine Ali, estimated damage to the car at $2,730 and to the TV and mirror at $1,555. No sign of forced entry was reported.
Woman charged with marijuana
A 54-year-old Goldsboro woman was arrested Sunday on Greenleaf Street by Goldsboro police and charged with felony and misdemeanor drug violations.
Annette Marie Taylor of West Walnut Street was charged with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. She also was charged with an opened container violation and speeding. Ms. Taylor was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Trash fire spreads to house
Ashes from burning trash on Saturday ignited car seats and damaged a home at 596 U.S. 13 South, Wayne County fire officials said.
Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Chief Delbert Edwards estimated damage at $1,000. Mar Mac firefighters assisted in putting out the fire. The resident's name was not available.

These people have been charged with driving while impaired by Wayne County law-enforcement officers:
*Robert Paul Newman, 45, Union Street, .14 percent blood-alcohol content (BAC), $500 bond; also charged with driving left of center.
*Charles Matthew Wiggs, 18, Walnut Creek Drive, .07 percent BAC (zero tolerance law), $600 bond; also charged with driving after drinking under age, under-age possession of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
*Darian Travell Cherry, 18, Martin Road, .04 percent BAC (zero tolerance law), custody release; also charged with expired inspection.
*Eddie Ceaf Altman, 49, O'Berry Center Road, test refused, $500 bond; also charged with driving while license revoked.
*Roberto Casillas Estrada, 26, Wooten Street, Fremont, .24 percent BAC, $500 bond.
*Alfonso Tamez III, 29, Lucama, .25 percent BAC, $800 bond; also charged with driving while license revoked.
*Francisco Casillas, 39, Black Creek Road, Fremont, .21 percent BAC, $500 bond; also charged with no operator's license.
*Angel Pizano Salinas, 42, U.S. 13 North, .09 percent BAC, $500 bond.
*Vonsheaka Colena Anderson, 23, Charlotte, .17 percent BAC, no bond listed; also charged with reckless driving and driving while license revoked.
*Jose R. Castro, 41, Croom Drive, Dudley, .18 percent BAC, $500 bond; also charged with speeding.
*Arulfo Diaz Roblero, 18, Burke Street, Dudley, .16 percent BAC, $800 bond; also charged with opened container violation and no operator's license.
*William Aycock, 26, North Beston Road, LaGrange, .10 percent BAC, $500 bond; also charged with drinking while driving.
*Terry Lee Terrance Jr., 24, Cullowhee, .15 percent BAC, $500 bond.
