Severe weather
Wayne and other counties east of Interstate 95 could see isolated severe thunderstorms late this afternoon through the evening as a strong front moves over the state.
A mix of warm air and a cold front moving in from the west will create enough instability to trigger strong storms with damaging winds and the possibility of a tornado.
People should monitor changing weather conditions and weather bulletins in the event watches or warnings are issued.
Rain could be heavy today, and flooding is possible on roads and in low areas. Rain is expected to end before midnight, and the weather will turn sharply colder Saturday.
Transportation ideas sought
Anyone who drives, bikes or walks in Goldsboro is invited to a transportation planning meeting on Thursday.
The workshop is being sponsored by the city of Goldsboro from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and will take place at the Wayne County Public Library in the Gertrude Weil Auditorium.
The city is planning road, bicycle, pedestrian, rail and transit improvements within the city and areas it plans to annex.
All citizens interested in transportation issues are urged to attend.
DGDC wins awards
Goldsboro's efforts to improve downtown were recognized by the N.C. Main Street program.
Julie Metz Thompson, director of the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp., accepted the award on behalf of the DGDC for Best Main Street Newsletter for the Around Downtown category.
Sherry Archibald, DGDC promotions coordinator, and Bobby Parker, owner of Parker Advertising, accepted the award on behalf of the DGDC for Best Innovation for the "Downtown Living Show" produced and aired on PACC-10 TV.
Another award winner from Goldsboro was the N.C. Main Street Champion, Charlie Gaylor, a lawyer and historian, for his tireless efforts to make downtown a viable part of the community.
Sergeant honored
Staff Sgt. John Filbert, a crew chief with the 4th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, won the Air Combat Command Ground Safety Award this month. It is for his actions on the flight line in September.
He is a member of the Red Aircraft Maintenance Unit and performed emergency procedures on an F-15E Strike Eagle when it unexpectedly went into auto-acceleration.
He ensured that the aircraft was safe after performing several procedures and also extinguished a fire in the left engine tailpipe. After the maintenance, the jet was able to fly the same day as scheduled.
Barkley on TV
Goldsboro resident Monika Barkley will chat with Diane Sawyer on Monday morning on the "Good Morning America" show.
The show airs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on ABC.
Mrs. Barkley, along with Dr. Phil McGraw, will talk with Ms. Sawyer about her weight-loss challenge on the "Dr. Phil" show.
