A weekly support group formed this week for co-workers and friends fighting the "losing battle" of extra weight.
The 15-week nutrition and wellness program will focus on weight management, food selection and preparation, and the importance of exercise. Its purpose is to challenge and inspire participants to make lifestyle changes for improved health.
She said 70 men and women enrolled the first night and more are expected. In order to achieve the best results, registration will be accepted through the third session, which will be Feb. 17.
"The old program focused on the scales," said Christine Smith of Wayne County Cooperative Extension and sponsor of the program. "This one has different goals."
She said participants will choose what they want to work on and chart their progress weekly.
The sessions are held in the Wayne Center on George and Chestnut streets each Tuesday night from 5:30 to 6:30. Among the topics to be covered over the coming weeks are establishing an eating pattern, lean lunch ideas, snacking light, bulking up to slim down.
Weigh-ins will be held each week. At the outset, representatives from the county Health Department helped with blood pressure and cholesterol checks.
